Buybacks Blast The Ready 2 Race Sales At Bendigo

The sales is a fantastic concept and the day was a credit to the GRV and Club from a hospitality point of view. Full race day style catering, a fully stocked bar and an open TAB provided breeders, trainers and buyers with everything they could have wanted.

Except for the opportunity to buy the dogs that they had come to purchase.

Plenty of dogs “went under the hammer”, but plenty didn't. They might be as sold, but when they are being bought back does it really count?

One young bitch with plenty of early pace attracted a stack of attention and was sure to be a good buy for someone. Nup, bought back for $17,250. This is utterly ridiculous on many fronts, but isn't the fault of the owner in any capacity.

High profile trainer arrived with quality performers Bremer and Sig Sauer. Both were bought back and remain at Darren's place according to Fasttrack. These two sons of – Great Gunns will now contest the potentially weak $25,000 race next year.

What are the options to make this fairer for those wanting to buy and sell legitimately? There were a few thoughts being thrown around by various people in attendance Saturday.

1 – Buybacks aren't eligible to race in the series.
2 – Buybacks are charged at 25% instead of 10%.
3 – Make the auction an optional reserve auction. But those that place a reserve can't race in the series.
4 – Option of withdrawing from auction if unhappy with the performance. Again, can't race in the series.
5 – Buybacks pay full price of the purchase on the day and receive a 90% rebate the following week from the GRV. Buyers can't pay 10% on the day, so it should be fair for all.

One thing is for sure, the current system makes it tough for genuine buyers to purchase a dog. There were instances where genuine buyers sat back and didn't even get to “raise a paddle”. Another instance resulted in a buyer genuinely bidding to $15,000 and copping frowns from a person that was obviously buying back regardless of price.

It's blatantly obvious that people don't want to lose a young pup with genuine ability that hasn't fired a shot in the sales heats. However, there needs to be something in place to separate the genuine buyers from the buybacks.

Also of note is that was at the sales to buy, but left empty handed. He has been heavily involved in past sales at Bendigo and races performer Kiss Me Ketut who has won in excess of $200,000 in prizemoney. was at the sales and didn't buy.

was at the sales and bought one of Robert Crawford's lots, Zelemar Storm; who he is currently syndicating to potential new clients.

However plenty of industry leaders left without buying despite intending to do so and this indicates a significant problem. If it isn't broken you don't fix it, but these sales need some changing. The concept is fantastic, but it's time to make some adjustments.

As for buy backs if a dog does not reach the price you want you should just sell it any way that’s just bad luck get real

Totally agree. Some breeders have unreal expectations.

GRV haven’t done themselves any favours though their lack of transparency. Even Magic Millions and Inglis list the purchaser of the auction lot. By not publicly recording the buyer, GRV look like they are covering up the buybacks.

Dont put your pups in if you are not a genuine seller, penalties should be paid for buy backs and they should not be eligible for race, otherwise this is just another public relations fiasco

Had interest in the first auction then saw how many were buybacks I now hold no interest at all in the R2R idea.
