2009 Victorian Waterloo Cup Round Up

Another Waterloo Cup run and won! This year the Waterloo Cup meeting was held at Longwood and what a fine meeting it was. As is the norm, the weather through some challenges to the coursing fraternity and naturally we met the challenges head on and the meeting didn't miss a beat.

Saturday we saw the first ties of the Waterloo Cup with 58 greyhounds contesting this $10,000 event. All trainers knew it was going to be a 6 run haul for the eventual winner and runner up.

Black Hummer was a strong favourite, with Campaspe Jack, King's Wizard, Santosa's Rose, Voodoo Oak, , Head Barista, Syonic Line, and Bull Bar Barb all in the running. All of these greyhounds had coursed well during the season, winning several events.

During the first round we saw Black Hummer and Campaspe Jack drawn against each other and this course gained a maximum amount of attention. Black Hummer gained the advantage from slips and even though Campaspe Jack made a late charge near the finish, Black Hummer moved to the next round.

During the third round another course where there was a good bit of interest saw the two bitches contesting the coursing bitch of the year meet at slips. Voodoo Oak exited the slips brilliantly leaving Santosa's Rose with a job to do to try and haul this Dark Brindle bitch in. But Voodoo Oak's lead was too great and she despatched Santosa's Rose as she'd done with here previous two rivals on the day.

There were many close courses and as is the case with this feature meeting, greyhounds defeated in the first round of the Waterloo Cup are eligible to contest the Waterloo Plate, greyhounds defeated in the second round of the Waterloo Cup are eligible to contest the Waterloo Purse.

Greyhounds defeated in the third round of the Waterloo Cup and another other greyhounds defeated during the day can enter the Challenge Cup which this year was named as a memorial in honour of Bert Clark, a long-time stalwart of the Longwood Coursing Club.

On the Sunday a big day had been planned to cater for families. Face painting, Balloon Sculpturing, and plenty of fun activities had been planned plus the Dash for Cash. This footrace had been aimed at the local football fraternity and although the numbers were not as high as was expected this event created a lot of interest for the spectators.

Two heats were contested during the lunch break and the final was contested during the afternoon tea break. A local lad by the name of Dylan Cornick was the winner.

As for the children's activities it was great to see kids being kids. Sack Races, Tug O War, Juggling games. Just good healthy fun games for kids to do. I bet they all slept well Sunday night. I am sure that the kids loved it and whilst these activities might have been the usual games that children once played, that's not the case now. Just goes to prove that everything old is new again.

The weather on Sunday was drizzly rain with an overcast sky and everyone was wondering, how long will this last? Will it clear? Most people taking greyhounds to slips or catching greyhounds were looking a bit damp and forlorn. But the weather did clear well before lunch and it even improved as the day went on.

Our finals were run with the sun shinning and with a good crown in attendance. Many local people who had not attended a coursing meeting in a while came to have a peek at the big day out. Plus there were other people that had never seen coursing at all.

A supporting card of 6 events saw a 10 event program on the Sunday. With the cup dogs starting the days coursing we saw Harry Haulage defeat Plunger who did make a late plunge right on the line but Harry's lead was too big.

Voodoo Oak easily despatched King's Wizard who is still a puppy by coursing standards.

Black Hummer was lead out of slips by Head Barista but put the after burners on at the half way mark and grabbed victory just before the line.

Our Vera defeated the greyhound with the unusual name of Jeff. This greyhound had not coursed previously. And then there were four!

Next up were the “Plate” dogs. Silent Assassin accounted for Credit Cruncher and Texas law defeated Black Mane. Campaspe Jack defeated Syonic Line. With three left to compete in the semis, Campaspe Jack would get a bye run into the final.

On to the “Purse”, Miracle Merc defeated Arlough Angel, Rythmic Oak defeated Miracle Ace, Geoffy defeated Cindy Fitz and Newhaven run the bye.

In the Bert Clark Memorial Challenge Cup, we saw Black Vanadium defeat Billabong Spur, Tell Em ran a bye with the scratching of Where's Lucy. Stately Phoenix defeated Nirranda Way and Santosa's Rose defeated Keen Contented.

After a lunch break the semi finals of all events was contested and by now all the greyhounds were really starting to feel the pinch. These Waterloo events are a test of not only speed but endurance. In the first course after lunch, Voodoo Oak took the early lead and coursing beautifully to the finishing line to defeat Harry Haulage.

Next up was Black Hummer and Our Vera. Black Hummer got the upper hand early and ran quickly to the line to defeat Our Vera. So after 5 rounds we had our finalists. Voodoo Oak off the red and Black Hummer off the White.

Texas Law had his big guns firing and didn't let Silent Assassin sight the lure and with Campaspe Jack's bye, the final would be between Texas Law and Campaspe Jack.

The Purse, saw Miracle Merc send Rythmic Oak back to the float and Newhaven did likewise to Geoffy. The purse final would be between Miracle Merc and Newhaven.

The Bert Clark Memorial saw Tell Em defeat Black Vanadium and Santosa's Rose defeat Stately Phoenix. This final would be between Tell Em of the red and Santosa's Rose of the white.

Whilst there has been little said of the supporting events, many locals had there greyhounds entered for these maiden and puppy events. Local Bitch Pure Silk won here bitch maiden for Vin Edwards from Euroa when she defeated Ciarrai Entity for A Hyde of Longwood.

Koyuga Logic broke his maiden status for his trainer Steven Burke from Echuca Village and it was great to see this dog win. He defeated 's Asper Oh.

The other dog maiden was won by 's when he defeated Gary Robinson's Sanbri Storm. Murray had another winner with Pure Tonic in the Mixed Puppy when Pure Tonic defeated the Whybrow's Northern Nick.

Northern Shimmer and Northern News for the Whybrow/Quigley team from Chiltern took out the Bitch and Dog Puppy with the defeat of Big Dragon by Northern Shimmer and Galba Bruce by Northern News. Big Dragon is trained by Reg Marriner from Lalor and Galba Bruce is trained by Brian Fothergill from Numurkah.

The Bert Clark Memorial Challenge saw first time courser Tell Em defeat Santosa's Rose. Tell Em quickly took the lead and didn't let her rival get a chance. Tell Em is trained by Calvin Russell from Kyabram. Santosa's Rose is trained by from Portland.

In the Waterloo Plate, Campaspe Jack took the lead quickly and coursed well to the line seeing Texas law take the runner up's prize. Campaspe Jack is trained by Norm Walls from Melton and Texas Law is trained by Nicole Stanley from Portland.

The final event of the day was the running of the 2009 NCAV Waterloo Cup. This was the event that everyone had wanted to win. All the hopes and dreams of the day before had been done and dusted for all but two of the trainers and/or owners.

The trophies had been on display since Friday and this year the NCAV has decided to have a perpetual trophy for the Waterloo Cup. All names of previous winners back to 1873 have been engraved on the plates that surround the trophy's stand. Whose name is going to be engraved beside the 2009 year?

The two finalists and their trainers headed off to the slips for the 6th and final time. Voodoo Oak was the favourite with bookmaker Gary Thomas. Black Hummer was the favourite earlier at this meeting and especially earlier in the season. We all knew that the best two greyhounds had got through the final.

Kristie and Murray Collyer's Dark Brindle Bitch, Voodoo Oak verus Carol and John Westerlo's Black Dog, Black Hummer. Both the Collyer's and the Westerlo's are both coursing enthusiasts and they support our meetings not only throughout this coursing season but for many coursing seasons. Either greyhound and either family would be great winners. Remember this is the event all coursing folk want to win. This is our event of events.

Gary Brett our slipper for many of the meetings this year who had been doing a sterling job for the whole weekend despatched them beautifully from slips. Voodoo Oak off the red collar and on the rail held her position and tried to inch ahead. But Black Hummer who was off the white collar and on the outside was still right beside her.

At the half way mark Voodoo Oak has gained a length on Black Hummer but he'd had a fifth gear and this had been seen during the event when he came from behind on several occasions. But this time Voodoo Oak who had not been headed and had won all her courses convincingly ran away with a resounding victory. It was a great display from a fine coursing bitch.

Voodoo Oak is the first bitch to win the Waterloo Cup since Hoppy's Hunt in 1996. It's not an easy event for bitches to win as greyhound's need strength as well as the speed and endurance.

Congratulations must go to Kristie Collyer and her beautiful brindle bitch Voodoo Oak. It's great to see father (Murray) and daughter working together on a project as I am sure this was a team effort for the whole Collyer family. Well done to the runner up Black Hummer, he's only a young dog, so we'll look forward to seeing him back ‘on the plumpton' next season in 2010.
