2010 Group 2 City Of Ipswich Gold Cup Heats Preview And Tips

Tonight's greyhound racing see the running of the 2010 Group 2 City Of Ipswich Heats with the final winner looking at a $25,000 first prize.

Queenslander Dashing Corsair looks the logical pre-post favourite based on his last start 29.93 win at last Thursday, and his 30.37 best on the Ipswich track.

The only other greyhound engaged in the heats to have successfully gone under the 30.40 mark at Ipswich is the trained .

But while Gnarley Boy has to contend with a full field and the outside draw in his heat, the trained Dashing Corsair will have the luxury of a just a field of five greyhounds and two vacant boxes to his inside.

The winners of each of the heats and the three fastest seconds will progress to the Group 2 final.

Tough heat to kick off on but looks something of a between and Banzai Pipeline who has been racing over the middle distances more recently. Banzai Pipeline hasn't won a sprint race since April 2010 and despite some very consistent recent efforts looks outclassed by Side Cutter who should have the pace cross and led it from box 7. A last start Brisbane 30.46 winner and he did manage three in a row at this track as a young greyhound and is drawn well enough out wide. Roman Nose Best is having his first start here over 520m but is unbeaten from two attempts over the 431m a pretty handy record of 14 wins from 24 starts.

Tips : 7. Side Cutter, 4. Banzai Pipeline, 8. Roman Nose Best

Scratching of Mr Prizz takes most of the gloss off this heat. If Octane Show can reproduce his best here at his first run in Queensland for new trainer Tony Brett, he will win this by panels. A 29.66 Sandown winner and 29.76 Meadows winner, as well as Group 2 Cup finalist he looks well drawn in box 7 where he has won 4 from 6. Beltah Magic has been racing consistently and is well drawn, while Quays On Logan on best behaviour would be most likely to fill a third.

Tips : 7. Octane Show, 3. Beltah Magic, 2. Quays On Logan

Race No. 4 Ht 3 City Of Ipswich Gold Cup 07:12PM (QLDtime)

Little to separate many chances in this third heat. Late Show Lee had it drawn the inside of the track might have been some hope, but not from box 8 in this field. In contrast Azzan Bale might have improved considerably at his third start in Queensland had he drawn wide. Pace in the race looks to be clearly with the three inside boxes and they look best placed to fight the race out. Hot Drink has won 4 from 6 here and is unbeaten from box 1. Just Coincidence has only had the 6 starts but has won 5 of them. This is her biggest test to date and not sure she can lead Hot Drink. Duffy too has a good record at the track of 2 from 3 and a good last start 30.28 win at Albion Park but will have a task to cross the two to his inside.

Tips : 1. Hot Drink, 2. Just Coincidence, 3. Duffy

Race No. 6 Ht 4 City Of Ipswich Gold Cup 07:55PM (QLDtime)

Scratching decimated race now looks a one act affair with Dashing Corsair drawn with moderate beginning Punk Platinum to his outside and two vacant boxes to his inside. Based on his last start 29.93 effort at Albion Park he looks set to add to his record of 39 wins from 92 starts with a further 24 placings. Doyen Star who has drawn ideally in box 1 has a great record of 5 from 11 here and a recent 30.44 here. She has early pace and might be able to go with Dashing Corsair for a fair bit of the journey. Punk Platinum remarkably gets her first box 8 draw from 38 starts and although not a brilliant beginner, the draw suits ideally and she is a recent Group 2 Cup finalist.

Tips : 7. Dashing Corsair, 1. Doyen Star, 8. Punk Platinum

Race No. 7 Ht 5 City Of Ipswich Gold Cup 08:15PM (QLDtime)

Full field to finish the last in which Gnarley Boy should run favourite despite his lacklustre record from box 8. Like Punk Platinum in the previous he is a recent Group 2 Lismore Cup finalist and has a near career best 30.03 win at Albion Park to his credit just 4 starts back. His record here is good having won 3 and placed 2 from 5 starts with a best of 30.36 making him the fastest greyhound drawn in the heats, but just a bit wary of him from the draw. Hatinator looms almost certain to lead from box 2 and has just racked up a hattrick of wins here at Ipswich. Although she only has a 30.63 career best win here, all her wins have been at this track and distance and she looks best placed to upset the favourite. is racing well below his career best at the moment but is capable of figuring in the finish if he can get a look at them at some point in the race.

Tips : 2. Hatinator, 8. Gnarley Boy, 6. Santino Marella
