Box One – Scarp Missile
Black Bitch – 26.4kg – March 2013
x Barney's Beauty
Prize money: $28,785
Trainer: Trevor Jessup
Career: 54: 16-16-3
T/D: 3: 1-1-0
T/D Best: 30.59

“Drawn to fire to the early lead and since coming across to SA she has been firing on all cylinders. Last time out she was able to lead them up and it took the strong Placid Planet forever to reel her in. From the red draw tonight she should be able to fire to the early lead and if she can hold them out at the bend she should give a great sight. The last 30m is always a concern in this company but she has shown a lot more strength in recent months and she will make them work overtime to reel her in.”

Box Two – It's Classified
Black Dog – 34.2kg – July 2013
Velocette x Abbadale Elle
Prize money: $14,085
Trainer: Troy Murray
Career: 16: 8-3-1
T/D: 2: 2-0-0
T/D Best: 30.23

“Super talent and he is the current track record holder over this track and trip. Last week he exited the same draw and after a steady beginning he was able to work into the contention through the first corner and from there on he never looked back when posting a sizzling 30.39. His box manners can sometimes let him down, but with the speed in boxes one and three he should be able to get a nice run through the corner and if he settles in the top three or four he will take a power of beating. He is quite short but he does look well placed in this event.”

Box Three – Marlow Brown
Black Dog – 29.2kg – January 2014
Lochinvar Marlow x Liza Brown
Prize money: $3,120
Trainer: Paula Hearnden
Career: 5: 3-2-0
T/D: 1: 0-1-0
T/D Best: 31.06

“Inexperienced chaser but he has shown tremendous talent to date and he was far from disgraced when placed in his heat last week. He went the quickest to the first marker and if he reproduces that type of effort he should match the red in the initial stages. My only concern with him is that he has only had the one try over this trip and he may be found wanting in the final stages in this class. Going to be a class act in the future but he is probably two or three runs short at present.”

Box Four – Placid Planet
Black Dog – 32.8kg – January 2012
x Bogie Angel
Prize money: $60,150
Trainer: Ben Rawlings
Career: 50: 22-13-3
T/D: 4: 3-1-0
T/D Best: 30.62

“Loves racing here and one out he is just as talented as any chaser in this race, however he does like to get out into some open space and from the middle pin he is likely to get squeezed out. Turned in a strong effort to score in his heat last week but I can't see him making an impact from this draw.”

Odds to win the Gawler Cup: $26 with Bet365

Box Five – Real Flash
Blue Bitch – 27.9kg – January 2013
x Bonegilla Flash
Prize money: $65,665
Trainer: Troy Murray
Career: 23: 12-4-2
T/D: 3: 3-0-0
T/D Best: 30.31

“Another with a big engine but she hasn't faired to well with the box draw. Two starts back she posted an eye popping 30.31 win over this journey and if she happened to ping the lids she would take a power of beating. The big concern with her is that she has a wide runner drawn directly underneath and there is a heap of speed drawn on her outside, so if she misses the kick she is going to find a lot of bother. She is going to be well fancied but I'm happy to risk her from this draw.”

Odds to win the Gawler Cup: $5.50 with William Hill

Box Six – Peejay Jack
Black Dog – 29.5kg – December 2012
x Uno Emi
Prize money: $30,140
Trainer:
Career: 50: 14-12-6
T/D: 7: 2-3-1
T/D Best: 30.67

“Another who has a good record here and he can show early speed in his races, however he does tend to race best when drawn nearer the inside. I dont think he can get across tonight but he will carve across and he should bring the seven and eight into the race.”

Odds to win the Gawler Cup: $31 with Bet365

Box Seven – Gun Mcbain
Black Dog – 31.2kg – November 2012
Spring Gun x
Prize money: $78,485
Trainer: Todd Kelly
Career: 63: 34-10-4
T/D: 9: 7-2-0
T/D Best: 30.33

“Won this race last year and although he isn't going as well as he was, he is still more than capable. If he can step cleanly, he should get a nice cart across from the six in the initial stages and if he finds the top he will give a great sight. He clearly isn't as strong in the closing stages these days but his early speed is a big asset and he is a must for the exotic bets.”

Odds to win the Gawler Cup: $9 with William Hill

Box Eight – Cash In Looper
Black Dog – 33.9kg – March 2012
Where's Pedro x Little Looper
Prize money: $27,885
Trainer: Troy Murray
Career: 53: 20-7-8
T/D: 12: 6-2-2
T/D Best: 30.25

“Ideally drawn in the pink and he turned in a monster effort when placed in his heat last week. He tends to begin better when drawn out wide and he can show smart early speed when he gets away cleanly. The six and seven should carve across to the rail in the early stages and that should allow him to get a nice cart across in the initial stages and if he can balance up in the top three, he will prove very hard to hold out. He is my top pick for the final and with the two expected to start short, he should be value.”

Odds to win the Gawler Cup: $4.60 with William Hill

Top Four: 8 – 2 – 1 – 7
