THE Apple Isle will hold the spotlight tonight with seven heats of the Group Three Devonport Cup to be run and won over 452 metres. Each heat winner plus the fastest second will qualify for next week's $25,000-to-the-winner final.
Let's take a look at each of the heats.

Heat One
The first heat sees classy Victorian speedster Top Secret take on up and coming local star Breaker's Tip. Top Secret had little luck when contesting a heat of the Hobart Thousand recently and I would expect an improved effort today. His best performances in Victoria have come on similar tracks to this one and I expect him to be burning from the outset.
Breakers Tip was a finalist in the Hobart Thousand and he has won three of six here, he will need to lead to win but if he holds them out he will give a great sight.
Night Tremors is more than capable but he is poorly drawn nearer the inside.
Underclass Hero is probably the only other genuine chance, he is well placed in the pink draw and he is back in form. If he can reproduce his blistering 25.28 PB run he will take a power of beating
Top Four: 4 – 3 – 8 – 2
1st: $1,655 2nd: $470 3rd: $235.

Heat Two
This is easily the best race on the card and I can't wait to see Senor Slamma take on Prescribe. Senor Slamma is probably better suited to a wider draw but, if he can step cleanly, he should be able to hold them out and he will make Prescribe work hard for victory. Senor Slamma has won eight of 16 here and he jumps and runs on most occasions.
Prescribe is the new star on the rise and he returns home after a luckless stint in Victoria, he should get a perfect sit behind Senor Slamma early and he should fill the quinella spot.
Kinloch's Fury and Gemstone Jack look the likely place hopes, both have good records here and if they can avoid early bother they should fight for the minor end of the money.
Top Four: 1 – 2 – 6 – 8
1st: $1,655 2nd: $470 3rd: $235.

Heat Three
Very tough race to assess but I think Pipstar is getting close to another win and she is suitably drawn out wide. Three starts back she was placed behind Dyna Villa and last time out she was placed behind the classy Sing The Song, if she can get away cleanly she should run a bottler.
Kalaway Ernie is all class and if he is fit he will be right in the mix, he resumes after four months off but he has the good draw and he has won here previously in a dazzling 25.48.
Minnie Mogul has a poor record here but she is racing well, she has the speed to lead and she could give a nice site at odds.
Buckle Up Fletch is also worth watching, his current form isn't great but he is much better than that and if he happens to ping he will regain some confidence.
Top Four: 7 – 8 – 2 – 3
1st: $1,655 2nd: $470 3rd: $235.

Heat Four
Another very even heat and I think the Victorian Blurred Lines can lead all the way, two starts back he won a heat of the Hobart Thousand and on that occasion he defeated a similar lineup to what he meets today.
Bain's Lane probably has the most talent of any runner in the field but his box manners are terrible and he can't afford to make too many mistakes today, if he pings then he probably wins but if he misses away he will need a lot of things to go right.
Dark Vito is an excitement machine and he has won four in a row and all of those wins have been in sizzling times, he will need luck from the draw but if he gets away he should be in the firing line for the entire trip.
Heliski rounds out the chances, he has the perfect draw and I can see him running on strongly and grabbing some minor money.
Top Four: 4 – 3 – 6 – 8
1st: $1,655 2nd: $470 3rd: $235.

Heat Five
Bruny Venture is a lid pinger and he has been racing in brilliant fashion of late, he has won four of five over this journey and with an ounce of luck early he should be able to roll to the early lead. He meets some handy ones here but he has beaten similar line ups of late and he is a very speedy customer when he lands on the lure.
Hekate Belle is a classy Victorian and if she gets away cleanly she will most likely prove too strong, she is better suited to a rails draw but she is strong and more than capable of overcoming a few difficulties in running.
Demi Cali will be well supported and she is highly promising, I think she is a risk from the red as she may get crowded in the early stages.
Wynburn Wizard could be the value, his recent runs have been impressive and he might get a nice sit early.
Blue Mayhem is another talented Victorian who can run a race at odds, she will need some luck early but she is high on confidence at present and she is more than capable.
Top Four: 4 – 6 – 7 – 3
1st: $1,655 2nd: $470 3rd: $235.

Heat Six
Sing The Song is the current track record holder and she has drawn perfectly in the pink. Last time out she returned to form with a brilliant 25.69 win here and she should get a nice cart across from Her Highness in the early stages.
Her Highness hasn't had a lot of luck since going to Victoria but she did commence her career her and she left this State with a brilliant record, she should roll to the early lead and she will make Sing The Song work hard for victory.
Daniel's Bay has a tremendous turn of foot and if he is given some room early he will take a power of beating, he has won five of 14 here and he holds a super impressive 25.42 PB.
She's All Class is well named and she must be respected, I dont like the draw but she is far too good to dismiss.
Top Four: 8 – 7 – 3 – 4
1st: $1,655 2nd: $470 3rd: $235.

Heat Seven
Last chance to qualify and this is probably the hardest heat to assess. Blue Mccool can be a little inconsistent but in his 30.16 Launceston win three runs back he showed blistering mid race pace and I think a similar effort today would see him figure in the finish.
Senor Scooby was a zippy 25.68 winner here from this draw three runs back and he is likely to lead for a long way, it's a big rise in class today but he should be able to handle the pressure.
Roxy Rhythm and Callamac Baz round out the chances, both love this track and trip and they are both suitably drawn out wide.
Top Four: 2 – 1 – 6 – 8
Australian Racing Greyhound will have a full review of the heats, including the box draw for next week's final, by tomorrow morning.
Happy Punting!
