2015 WA Sprint and Distance Championships form, tips and preview

THE finals of both the WA Sprint and Distance Championships will be run and won on Saturday night, with Mandurah set to host the features following the closure of the old track earlier this year.

The Sprint Championship will be the first to jump, with the -trained Fun Boss the current $2.50 favourite with William Hill. The son of Kinloch Brae and Alotta Fun comes into the race in terrific form as a winner of his last two races including a quick 27.46 heat performance last week. Next best in the market is Nero Bolt, another chaser racing in superb style. The track specialist has won eight of 10 over the track and trip including his last five starts in succession, culminating with a hot 27.47 display last Saturday.

Two chasers are currently vying for favouritism in the Distance decider, with rails runner Deadly Boy ($2.05 with William Hill) holding a slight upper hand with punters over Ben Abercrombie's Party Hunter ($2.25).

Deadly Boy, a former Victorian campaigner, took a while to hit his straps in the West but has well and truly found his feet now, stringing together three on end, all over the 647-metre trip at Mandurah, with his best time being a sizzling 36.77. A repeat of that run would see the son of Superman and Dyna Gabi right in contention for the titie.

Deadly Boy's main threat, Party Hunter, will jump from box two. The white and black chaser has two wins and two seconds from four starts over the track and trip, with his personal best of 36.85 also ensuring it is right in the fight for the prize.

The WA Sprint and Distance Championships are races six and eight at Mandurah and will jump at 10:47pm and 11:27pm AEST respectively.

Lets check out the form of the runners in each final, with comments and selections courtesy of our tipster Brad Bugeja.

WA Sprint Championship Final – 490 metres

Box One – You Say Goodbye
White and Black Bitch – 30.1kg – August 2011
x Hello Sienna
Prize money: $43,215
Trainer:
Career: 59: 14-13-7
T/D: 7: 1-1-1
T/D Best: 27.81

“You Say Goodbye has been racing fairly in recent times and he probably doesn't have enough zip to go with some of the others in this race. Last week he just off the speed and he looked a little one paced when finishing second. Draw is a big help tonight but it won't be enough to get him over the line.”

Odds to win the WA Sprint Championship: $17 with William Hill

Box Two – Nero Bolt
Black Dog – 32.7kg – January 2013
Lochinvar Marlow x Lochinvar Coco
Prize money: $52,265
Trainer: Nick Minutillo
Career: 33: 16-3-5
T/D: 10: 8-0-0
T/D Best: 27.36

“Easily the most in form chaser in the state and some of his wins in recent weeks have been breathtaking. Last week he settled in second spot and he really wound up as they turned for home before scoring in a sizzling 27.47. If he can produce a similar effort tonight he will take a power of beating, however from the inside draw I do think he is a bit of a risk in this event – there is quite a bit of speed drawn around him and he is likely to get shuffled back soon after box rise.”

Odds to win the WA Sprint Championship: $3.90 with William Hill

Box Three – Fun Boss
Black Dog – 30.7kg – July 2013
Kinloch Brae x Alotta Fun
Prize money: $96,675
Trainer: Lexia Isaac
Career: 25: 14-7-2
T/D: 7: 3-2-0
T/D Best: 27.37

“Last week he speared the lids and he never looked in doubt when posting a blistering 27.46 heat win and if he can repeat that effort he should be winning. He has won three of seven over this journey with two of those wins being at his last two appearances. There is a lack of speed on his outside tonight, so he should get a clear passage in the first 50m and that should allow him to cross and zip away mid race. He has continued to get stronger with every start and he looks a really good bet in this event.”

Odds to win the WA Sprint Championship: $2.50 with William Hill

Box Four – All Strung Out
Black Dog – 32.1kg – August 2012
Bekim Bale x Casey's Angel
Prize money: $170,240
Trainer: Chris Halse
Career: 54: 18-10-16
T/D: 4: 2-1-0
T/D Best: 27.56

“Super talent and he is capable of just about anything when he gets into some wide open space, the only concern tonight is that whether or not he will get a chance to from the middle draw. Last week he had a favourable wide draw and he was far from disgraced when placed behind Jimmy Margetts. There is no doubting he has the talent to win, it all comes down to what happens in the first 50m for him.”

Odds to win the WA Sprint Championship: $10 with William Hill

Box Five – Jimmy Margetts
Black Dog – 33.7kg – February 2013
Knocka Norris x
Prize money: $22,055
Trainer: Steve Shinners
Career: 20: 9-3-4
T/D: 6: 1-0-3
T/D Best: 27.50

“Had been struggling for a little while but last week he managed to come out well and he was able to regain some confidence with a commanding 27.55 heat win. The box draw makes things a little more difficult tonight but if he can get across and settle in the top two early, he should be right there at the end. Highly promising and could be worth a saver bet if he goes around at silly odds.”

Odds to win the WA Sprint Championship: $4.60 with William Hill

Box Six – Thunder Rama
Red Fawn Dog – 31.2kg – September 2011
x Bananarama
Prize money: $123,535
Trainer: John Iwanyk
Career: 89: 24-26-9
T/D: 18: 8-4-0
T/D Best: 27.42

“Track Specialist and he is my value bet for the final. He managed to score last week in a steady 27.81 and on face value it doesn't appear to be that impressive, however he has posted a blistering 27.42 here previously and he has the ability to lead or come from off the speed in his races. Is likely to be over the odds and could be the value.”

Odds to win the WA Sprint Championship: $12 with William Hill

Box Seven – Jabba Da Pup
Black Dog – 33.9kg – February 2012
Go Wild Teddy x Pretty Spiffy
Prize money: $56,000
Trainer:
Career: 45: 17-9-6
T/D: 15: 4-3-4
T/D Best: 27.36

“Big talent but he can be a little hard to follow at times, last week he had the red and he was able to pounce on the early lead before being run down by the in form Nero Bolt. If he gets across tonight he is more than capable of scoring, however it will be a tough ask and I can't see him getting the job done.”

Odds to win the WA Sprint Championship: $4.80 with William Hill

Box Eight – Ruble Monelli
Black Bitch – 28.0kg – January 2013
High Earner x Fantasy Monelli
Prize money: $53,825
Trainer: David Hobby
Career: 48: 16-14-5
T/D: 4: 0-2-1
T/D Best: 27.68

“She has been racing in great form of late and she is armed with early speed, however she tends to struggle against the real top graders and it is a tough ask to cross from the pink on the bend start. Great effort to qualify but can't see her making an impact.”

Odds to win the WA Sprint Championship: $20 with William Hill

1st Reserve – Starboost
Brindle Bitch – 26.3kg – November 2012
Give Me Five x Georgia Anne
Prize money: $34,415
Trainer: Sean Kavanagh
Career: 44: 14-5-7
T/D: 6: 4-0-1
T/D Best: 27.59

“Has won four of six here and owns a slick 27.59, however this is a big rise in class for her and likely to struggle if she gains a start.”

Odds to win the WA Sprint Championship: $15 with William Hill

2nd Reserve – Ronray Dreamer
Black Bitch – 26.0kg – December 2012
Cosmic Rumble x Ronray Disco
Prize money: $10,670
Trainer: Barry McPherson
Career: 32: 3-8-5
T/D: 5: 1-3-1
T/D Best: 27.62

“Solid record here and can run time with a clear run but she is meeting some class acts tonight and she will struggle to hold them off, unlikely to feature if she starts.”

Odds to win the WA Sprint Championship: $21 with William Hill

Top Four: 3 – 6 – 2 – 5

Suggested Bets:

Win bets on Fun Boss and Thunder Rama

Boxed Quinella: 2,3,5,6 ($6 for 100%)

Exacta: 3,6/2,3,5,6 ($6 for 100%)

Trifecta: 3/2,5,6/Field ($18 for 100%)

Trifecta: 2,5,6/2,3,5,6/2,3,4,5,6,7 ($36 for 100%)

WA Distance Championship – 647m

Box One – Deadly Boy
Black Dog – 30.4kg – March 2012
Superman x Dyna Gabi
Prize money: $93,510
Trainer: John Carmody
Career: 71: 21-14-11
T/D: 6: 3-1-1
T/D Best: 36.77

“Didn't run the hands off the clock when winning last week but he did look impressive when coming from off the speed and recording a solid 37.34. From the red draw tonight I am expecting him to step a lot better and he should have sufficient speed to hold them out in the run to the first turn. He owns a very zippy 36.77 PB here and he has won three of six, so he pretty much has everything in his .”

Odds to win the WA Distance Championship: $2.05 with William Hill

Box Two – Party Hunter
White and Black Dog – 30.9kg – September 2012
Black Wolf x Kalden Hania
Prize money: $62,315
Trainer: Ben Abercrombie
Career: 43: 16-11-6
T/D: 4: 2-2-0
T/D Best: 36.85

“Super consistent stayer and he has raced extremely well here in recent months. Last week he pounced on the early lead and he was never headed when posting an impressive 36.98 victory. I don't expect him to lead tonight but he should be able to rail through and get a nice sit on Deadly Boy for most of the trip. He is quite strong in the run home, so he should make the favourite work hard for victory.”

Odds to win the WA Distance Championship: $2.25 with William Hill

Box Three – Houdini Monelli
Black Dog – 30.8kg – January 2011
Magic Sprite x Fantasy Monelli
Prize money: $148,310
Trainer: David Hobby
Career: 111: 28-18-18
T/D: 3: 1-1-1
T/D Best: 37.06

“He has been a great chaser for a long time now and he is still racing extremely well. Last week he was very strong in the run home and he only went down narrowly when beaten by the talented Fachoong. There appears to be quite a bit of speed drawn near the inside in this event, so he too should be able to get a nice run through at the first turn and he should be there to threaten at nice odds.”

Odds to win the WA Distance Championship: $7.50 with William Hill

Box Four – Allen Eryk
White and Black Dog – 31.3kg – December 2011
Jarvis Bale x Greta Bale
Prize money: $87,355
Trainer: Enzo Crudelli
Career: 66: 15-11-8
T/D: 1: 0-1-0
T/D Best: 37.34

“Former star chaser and he showed a return to form with a solid heat placing last week. He does his best racing over this trip when he can lead easily and dictate the terms, however tonight there appears to be too much speed drawn around him so I can't see him figuring in the finish.”

Odds to win the WA Distance Championship: $14 with William Hill

Box Five – West On Dossy
Black Dog – 35.7kg – August 2013
Outa Credit x West On Wendy
Prize money: $9,285
Trainer: Chris Halse
Career: 17: 3-5-2
T/D: 3: 1-1-0
T/D Best: 37.16

“Inexperienced stayer and he doesn't appear to be quite strong enough to run the journey right out at present. Last week he took over mid race but because he had to work so hard early, he was always going to struggle in the closing stages. The box draw is a big disadvantage tonight and I can't see him making much of an impact.”

Odds to win the WA Distance Championship: $23 with William Hill

Box Six – Sitar Monelli
Black Dog – 30.6kg – December 2012
Bekim Bale x Mantra Jewel
Prize money: $42,530
Trainer: David Hobby
Career: 41: 12-15-7
T/D: 5: 1-2-1
T/D Best: 37.07

“Very strong chaser and if he had drawn better he would almost be my top pick. Last week he was slow to begin but he really powered to the line when placed behind Party Hunter. From the wider draw he is going to need some luck in the initial stages but if the gaps open mid race he will make a strong move and he could really threaten in the run home. Great chance but he is going to need a lot of luck in running.”

Odds to win the WA Distance Championship: $7.50 with William Hill

Box Seven – Fachoong
Black Dog – 31.3kg – March 2012
x Eye One
Prize money: $77,495
Trainer: John Carmody
Career: 62: 14-17-9
T/D: 2: 1-0-0
T/D Best: 37.33

“He had been struggling for quite a while but last week he managed to begin a lot better and when racing near the lead he really gains confidence. His winning time of 37.33 wasn't overly impressive but he has always raced well in this company and if you're looking for an outsider, he is one with a genuine winning chance.”

Odds to win the WA Distance Championship: $23 with William Hill

Box Eight – Coconut Grove
Black Dog – 36.0kg – November 2011
Bit Chili x Smell The Roses
Prize money: $87,610
Trainer: Andrew Ball
Career: 63: 11-10-9
T/D: 4: 1-0-2
T/D Best: 37.18

“Front runner who was in contention for most of the journey last week but he did fade in the home straight and he was beaten convincingly. From the pink draw he is likely to struggle to get across and if he has to work too hard early he is likely to capitulate in the home straight. Great effort to qualify but unlikely to feature.”

Odds to win the WA Distance Championship: $31 with William Hill

1st Reserve – Bionic Bolt
White and Red Brindle Dog – 31.2kg – February 2011
Knocka Norris x Sheboom
Prize money: $11,835
Trainer: Max Julien
Career: 41: 5-1-3
T/D: 1: 0-0-1
T/D Best: 37.49

“Steady chaser and he tends to struggle in this company. Has a poor winning record and just won't be able to keep up with this lot.”

Odds to win the WA Distance Championship: $31 with William Hill

2nd Reserve – Pandora's Sin
Black Bitch – 26.3kg – January 2012
Hallucinate x Amelia Bale
Prize money: $57,135
Trainer: Enzo Crudelli
Career: 68: 17-21-5
T/D: 5: 1-1-1
T/D Best: 37.26

“Can ping the lids and if starts from a wide draw she could run a very cheeky race. Would need to lead clearly but she would have the pace to get across and assume control.”

Odds to win the WA Distance Championship: $21 with William Hill

Top Four: 1 – 2 – 6 – 3

Suggested Bets:

Win bet on Deadly Boy

Boxed Quinella: 1,2,3,6 ($6 for 100%)
