2016 Group 1 Sandown Cup – best odds & betting preview

DUAL group 1 winner No Donuts is the favourite to take out Australia's Richest staying race, the Group 1 Cup (715m), at Sandown Park this Thursday following a slashing victory in his heat last week.

Beginning from box six at what was his first start in a month, the son of Fabregas and Chevy Princess took up the lead with a lap to go and powered to the line to defeat Kilkee Flex by three and one quarter lengths in 41.78.

The black dog has subsequently been installed as the $2.10 favourite with Bet365 to take out the $175,000 to the winner final where he has drawn box three. The 30.5kg frontrunner will be aiming to secure his 25th career win at start 46, with a victory set to take his career earnings above $498,000 for owner Brad Canty and trainer Anthony .

Rated the best chance of toppling the favourite is the promising Zipping Kane which is drawn off the track in box seven. Trained by Carolyn Jones, the son of Magic Sprite and Scarlett Girl was only having his second crack at the testing ‘700' trip in his heat, but ran the distance out very well when clocking a fast 41.83. With a remarkable strike rate of 13 wins and 13 placings from 29 starts, Zipping Kane is a $3.20 chance with Crownbet and comes into the race with plenty of confidence having won his past three in succession.

Wind Whistler, trained by Angela Langton, is the only other greyhound under double figure odds, the best price on offer being $9 with Crownbet. The white and black chaser secured a determined last to first win in his heat which followed a terrific 41.86 win in the Group 3 Lizrene over the track and trip on May 5.

Langton's partner also trains one of the finalists in Dublin Bull which has drawn box two. Rated an $11 shot to take out the feature with Sportsbet, the son of Barcia Bale and Chasin The Dream returned to his best with a 42.03 heat win last Thursday and has drawn favourably towards the fence in the decider.

Kilkee Flex ran a nice race in her heat, breaking the elusive 42 second barrier when finishing second behind No Donuts. The brindle bitch moves into box eight for the final and will be looking to race up on the speed if she is to be a chance of pinching the title at $17.

Group 1 Superstayers winner Luna Jinx for the Sandown Cup with a come from behind 42.26 win in her heat, but the experienced campaigner will have to contend with a less than ideal box six draw in the final.

Leading conditioner also has one in the feature, namely Who Dey which will start from box one in the feature, while the field is rounded out by Bells Are Ringin which has drawn box five where she will be out to secure win 16 at start 39.

The Group 1 Sandown Cup is race eight on the card at Sandown Park this Thursday and is set to jump at 9:40pm AEST.
