2016 Group 3 Devonport Cup: free betting preview and best odds

BOOM youngster Keune is the dog to beat in Tuesday's Devonport Cup final after her dominant 25.10 victory in last week's heat. The daughter of Barcia Bale and Miss Roman Nose, trained by leading Tassie conditioner , stepped fairly from box one in her qualifier last Tuesday, railing underneath the classy Long View Belle to assume the lead around the turn before kicking clear to score by a widening five-and-one-quarter lengths on the line.

Keune has drawn favourable in box two for the $25,000-to-the-winner decider, with online bookmaker Crownbet installing her as the $1.85 favourite to score her 16th career victory on Tuesday afternoon.

Medhurst also has grand campaigner Prescribe, $6.50, and the consistent Lorus Time, $26, engaged in the final, with the pair drawing boxes six and four respectively. Prescribe, a winner of 18 of his 58 starts, ran third in last year's Devonport Cup final and could go very close to taking out the 2016 edition if he can get anywhere near his 25.09 personal best over the track and distance.

Breaker's Tip, $3.65, will be aiming to score his maiden Group victory in Tuesday's feature, with the Gary Fahey-trained son of and Dennes Point a regular competitor at the top level. Throughout his career thus far the black dog has for both the Hobart Thousand and the Group 1 National Sprint Championship, making him a deserved winner should he cross the line in the premier spot in the Devonport Cup decider.

The Group 3 Devonport Cup is race eight on the card this Tuesday and is set to jump at 2:44pm AEDT.

Australian Racing Greyhound has previewed the chances of each runner in the final, with tips and comments from our expert form analyst, Brad Bugeja.

Box One – Breaker's Tip
Black Dog – 32.0kg – October 2012
Mogambo x Dennes Point
Prize money: $66,185
Trainer: Gary Fahey
Career: 47: 25-7-4
From box: 9 starts: 6 wins, 1 placing
T/D: 13: 7-1-1
T/D Best: 25.26
Career Highlights: WON 2015 Tassie Gold Cup, FINALIST 2014 Group 1 Hobart Thousand, 2015 Group 1 National Sprint Championship

“He has been a star chaser in Tasmania for quite some time now and although he is still racing well, he is a couple of lengths off his best. Last week he was able to lead all the way, however, although he copped a slight check, he only managed to record 25.47 and he will need to go a bit faster to score this week. The red draw does enhance his chances as with a clean getaway he should be able to punch through and hold the lead in the run to the first turn. If he does everything right at box rise he should give himself every chance to finish in the top three.”

T/D Best: 25.04

“Explosive talent and she was the fastest heat winner last week posting a scorching 25.10. She has won five of seven over this track and trip and she has the ability to lead or come from off the speed in her races. If the red can come out running, she should be able to get a nice run through in the early stages and if she is within striking distance as they turn for home she will take some stopping. She is clearly the most talented chaser in the event but she will need some luck in the initial stages.”

Odds to win the Devonport Cup: $1.85 with Crownbet

Box Three – Shanlyn Jed
Black Dog – 32.3kg – December 2012
x Shanlyn Lass
Prize money: $17,045
Trainer: Graeme Moate
Career: 33: 6-9-5

T/D Best: 25.50
Career Highlights: WON Devonport 25.50, Cranbourne 17.86, Shepparton 25.53, 26.26, Hobart 26.54

“Surprised quite a few last week when he was able to lead throughout to score in a steady 25.68. He was quite fortunate because there was a little bit of shuffling behind him and that allowed him to pinch a break. This week he is going to have his work cut out trying to lead and if he doesn't lead he won't have much hope. Great effort to qualify but this really does look beyond him.”

Box Four – Lorus Time
Black Dog – 32.5kg – April 2013
Magic Sprite x Wongawillilesley
Prize money: $27,135
Trainer: Ted Medhurst

T/D: 8: 3-1-0
T/D Best: 25.40
Career Highlights: 2ND 2015 Tassie Derby, FINALIST 2015 Tassie Gold Cup

“Absolute beast when on song but he hasn't won for a little while and he appears to have lost a little bit of his brilliance. He can show good early speed in his races but he does need room to get going and in this field I think he may get crowded in the initial stages. Clearly if given a clear passage he is more than capable of winning a race like this but the draw is definitely against him.”

Box Five – Elite Enfield
Blue Fawn Dog – 36.0kg – February 2013
Knocka Norris x Lady Eisenheim
Prize money: $38,515
Trainer: Graeme Barber
Career: 64: 18-11-16
From box: 9 starts: 1 win, 4 placings
T/D: 18: 5-4-3
T/D Best: 25.26
Career Highlights: FINALIST 2015 Tassie Gold Cup

“Easily the most consistent and honest chaser in this race and last week he looked super impressive when he powered to the line to score in a brilliant 25.26. There isn't a whole lot of speed drawn around him today, so if he can get away cleanly he should be able to drive through and put himself in a prominent position. He has a tremendous record over this journey and he could be the value bet in the race.”

Odds to win the Devonport Cup: $11 with Crownbet

Box Six – Prescribe
Black Dog – 31.9kg – March 2013
St. Pierre x Wongawilli Wala
Prize money: $43,304
Trainer: Ted Medhurst
Career: 58: 18-12-11
From box: 6 starts: 2 wins, 2 placings
T/D: 13: 7-1-2
T/D Best: 25.09
Career Highlights: FINALIST 2015 Group 1 Hobart Thousand, 3RD 2015 Group 3 Devonport Cup, 2015 Tassie Gold Cup

“Powerful chaser and he has won eight of 14 here with a dazzling 25.09 PB. Last week he was able to show a bit more early speed from the red and once he found the top he was never going to be beaten. The box draw is against him today but he has the ability to lead or come from behind and he just needs a clear passage so he can wind up. The biggest concern for him is that he has a couple of keen railers on his outside, so if he hesitates early he could get squeezed out. I don't think he will win but he can run home into some minor money.”

Odds to win the Devonport Cup: $6.50 with Bet365

Box Seven – Lemon Sunrise
Brindle Bitch – 29.0kg – June 2013
x Harbour Gift
Prize money: $13,301
Trainer: Pat Ryan
Career: 16: 8-3-1
From box: 2 starts: 1 win, 1 placing
T/D: 2: 2-0-0
T/D Best: 25.58
Career Highlights: WON Devonport 25.58, Hobart 26.06, Launceston 29.72

“Just keeps on winning at present and although her winning times haven't been impressive she is capable of going much faster. She is desperate for the inside, so the wide draw is definitely against her and there appears to be quite a bit of speed drawn on the inside so she is likely to be posted wide for most of the journey. Great effort to qualify and she will be a major player in Group races in the future, however I think she will struggle from out here.”

Odds to win the Devonport Cup: $34 with Crownbet

Box Eight – Droopy's Dasher
Black Dog – 33.1kg – January 2014
Droopy's Marco x Dyna Falcie
Prize money: $6,730
Trainer: Gerald Mace
Career: 8: 4-2-0
From box: 0 starts: 0 wins, 0 placings
T/D: 8: 4-2-0
T/D Best: 25.13
Career Highlights: Won Devonport 25.13

“Has always shown enormous talent and prior to last week he had won three of his past four here, however last week he went to a new level. From the two draw he absolutely fired out and he quickly went into overdrive before posting a devastating 25.13. If he can reproduce that effort he will definitely take some stopping but my concern is that he may get posted wide in the early stages. He is going to be well fancied and he can win, however place chances do appear best from out here.”
