Cindy Shelby’s Young Star Classic

Beginning brilliantly punters were at peace early on as she led down the back looking in no danger of defeat then racing away in the home straight to win by three and half lengths from ($5.50) and ($7.00) the only other finalists given any chance of upsetting the favourite from the inside draw.

Trainer Deen Parkinson a Nelson Bay Road House attendant almost didn't secure the talented daughter of Bombastic Shiraz and Deen's bitch Proper Shelby.

“I was lucky to get Proper Shelby, whom I bought as a six months old pup from breeder Dave Brown,” Deen explained.

“When I wanted to buy her, Dave's kids were keen to keep her.”

“But then they decided to buy a motor bike instead so I got Proper Shelby and later gave her to to train for me.”

“She was a good bitch for me while I was sailing around Australia.”

“When I returned and bred from her I got , along with Full On Shelby and Shelby One.”

‘Cindeen Shelby is obviously the best but the other pair should win in town.”

“Shelby One returned after injury to recently win at The Gardens.”

“She is only a couple of tenths slower than Cindeen, while Full On Shelby is back in work now too.”

“Full On Shelby won her 413m maiden at The Gardens in under 23.80 so is also very quick.”

Parkinson may by-pass the heats of the Rapidvite National Sprint Championship and save Cindeen Shelby for the Multicam at the Gardens.

Parkinson said after his bitch's classic win on Saturday night; “I haven't made up my mind yet but I am leaning towards the Black Top….. Heats of the National Sprint are scheduled for Wentworth Park on August 16 while the two Black Top, over 515m at The Gardens, begins with heats on September 3.”

“Cindeen Shelby is only a baby and would be giving away a lot in terms of experience and age against Australia's best sprinters in ….And it is a long series….I am more inclined to take her to Melbourne to have races at and The Meadows in the next couple of weeks and then prepare her for the Black Top. ”

“Cindeen Shelby loves The Gardens and has already won there in 29.56sec….She is a better bitch now than when she recorded those figures and I reckon she can get down to 29.40 there.”

Knocka Norris holds The Gardens 515m record of 29.25.

One thing is for certain the talented Red Fawn bitch has a bright future given she has early pace and has proven to be strong at end the end of her races a package always rare to find.

After the placed runners the field finished in the following order Octanol ($6.00), Fortunes ($10.00), Quicklee Tommy ($31.00), Velocette ($17.00) and Denro Bale ($16.00).

Cindeen Shelby is a Red Fawn bitch whelped August 2006 by Bombastic Shiraz from Proper Shelby (Royal Assassin x Proper Angel), she has now had 15 starts for 11 wins and two placings and the $25,000 first prize for the Young Star Classic took her over-all stake earnings to $40,170.

First run in 1973 the Young star Classic has been won by some brilliant young sprinters most of which went on to enjoy outstanding race careers.

In the case of a few of the winners they have later won some of the most important races on the group race calendar.
