Fabregas Named Australia’s Best Greyhound For August 2012

AGRA’s Greyhound of the Month for August 2012 is brilliant young Victorian sprint sensational Fabregas. He is raced and was bred by leading Victorian Studmaster Paul Westerveld and is trained by 23 year-old David Hirst. Fabregas has raced 13 times for 12 wins include an outstanding performance to win the Group 1 National Sprint Championship in Hobart last weekend. His efforts in August earned him the AGRA Greyhound of the Month award.

Fabregas who only started racing in May this year has emerged as Australia’s newest sprinting sensation. During August at his favourite track Sandown Park he brought up his eighth win there when he defeated a high quality field in the state final of the National Sprint. Fabregas had won his heat the week before and has proved a revelation at the Sandown track since his first win there on the sixth of May. He has steadily gone through the grades until he met and beat FFA class fields in July.

His big test came on the National scene last weekend. The son of Bombastic Shiraz-Wicked Witch began brilliantly from box seven and after a stoush with Uno Reltub (2) and Exclusive One (8) he found the rail and sped clear. Fabregas extended his lead in the home straight to hit the line three lengths clear of Queensland’s Glen Gallon with Exclusive One a game third almost a length away. Hirst was ecstatic after the win.

“What the dog did here in Hobart tonight hasn’t really sunk in yet but I’m sure the enormity of it will hit me in a day or two,” Hirst said as he led his rising star back to the presentation area.

“It was only a few months ago that this dog was having his first start so to come this far so quickly and win a Group 1 and a race that probably every trainer wants to win is just unbelievable,” he said.

Fabregas is a Black dog whelped October 2010 by Bombastic Shiraz from Wicked Witch (Larkhill Jo x Witch Magic). He is raced by Paul Westerveld and trained by David Hirst at Cranbourne in Victoria. He has now won 12 races of his 13 starts. The National Sprint Title first prize of $75,000 took his overall prizemoney to $131,055.

The month of August saw only five group races decided. Fabregas beat Group 1 winner Miata and Group 3 winners Hanson Senor, Trapper Jet and Here’s To You for the monthly award.

AGRA congratulates owner Paul Westerveld, trainer David Hirst plus Fabregas on being awarded the AGRA Greyhound of the Month for August 2012. He joins January Greyhound of the Month Oaks
