Golden Easter Egg Heats Something To Look Forward To
Written By Kevin Pitstock, Editor & Australian Greyhound Racing Expert Contributor Tuesday 4th March 2008
All eyes will be firmly focused on Wentworth Park this Saturday night for the $150,000 Nice Products Golden Easter Egg Heats and the action will be hot from the outset.
In Race 1, Reg Kay’s potential superstar, Made To Size, fresh from setting a new Albion park 520m track record; will take on the very in form Teaman Titch; trained by Victoria’s Dave Burnett and the improving Midnight Spirit trained by Rose Pringle.
Race 2 sees the appearance of the unfortunately named Mister Twink for Peter Giles. He takes on Wenty’s own Gun Hand for Richie Dean. Suprisingly the Dean’s who have featured for many years as prominent trainers at Wentworth Park, have never found a top three finish in an Easter Egg final, while Peter Giles has so far managed a third with Mabilis Babe in Stately Bird’s 2000 Easter Egg. Orphan Point for Gary Ernst is one that could spoil the party starting from out in Box 7.
The third heat will see Billy Bee Sting, Tiny Goddess, Just A Fly and Awesome Andrew carrying all the local support in a bid to thwart an avalanche of interstate runners. Victorian’s and Queenslander’s have literally descended from the clouds to swamp this race. The best of the local hopes is Awesome Andrew who is well boxed out wide but will need to be on his game to lead Rob Britton’s Fawn Hustler from an ideal draw.
Race 4 see the interstae trend continue although both All Caution for Darren McDonald and One Tree Hill for Rob Britton are former New South Wales dogs now residing over the border. Although poorly drawn True Destiny trained by one of New South Wales’ most under rated trainers in Liz Bont, could be the best of the local hopes although Life Of Brian for Victorian Pam Tabone appears well drawn and has the pace to lead.
Heat 5 is perhaps the most open of the heats with some good dogs engaged out of form and young up and comers like Calandre well boxed for Lorraine Atchison. Wayne Cox’s Uncle Joel is probably the testing material with slow begginer Jamazz drawn his outside, although Sins Spirit for Cyril Dooley is well boxed in eight with the out of form Cool Effort to his inside.
Race 6 is heat six of “The Egg” and strong local hopes Borat and Mountain Of Love will know they’re in a race with the speedy Que Sera Sera drawn against them. Angela Langton’s bitch has the pace to offset the visitor’s draw and although beaten by Bounding Billy in a heat of the Australian Cup she has since trialled in near record time at Warrnambool in preparation for the Warrnambool Classic later this year and will take a power of running down.
Race 7 sees Victorian trainer Martina Whelan’s cinderella story take a little hit having drawn quite a difficult field including last week’s Australian Cup winner Tasman Queen. Martina who trains the massively in form Brindiwilpa, has shown tremenedous aptitude for training in just her first year and has nursed Brindiwilpa to four victories on the trot, the last three in good class at Sandown. Tasman Queen and Sonador may spoil the party, but I’m sure the huge crowd on hand will warm to Martina and her little champ.
Race 8 is heat eight of the night and Team Bundy’s Bacholorette will face a stiff task from box six against the in form Clair Maude for Jason Thompson and recent Richmond Derby winner Mandagery Man for Sam Sultana. Hard to see either of these two being beaten here unless Run The Risk can find the form of June 2007 again.
Race 9 is the penultimate event for the night and will be worth waiting for with El Galo drawn to contest some of New South Wales most astute trainers in Christine Oldfield, Wayne Vanderburg, Sid Swain and Sam Sultana. It’s hard to see El Galo being beaten here given his last start runner up in the Australian Cup and his good early pace, but with such depth in the training ranks in this one, I’ll be waiting up and watching any market moves very closely.
The final heat of a class nights racing and Reg Kay will be looking to bookend the meeting with his other kennel star, Knocka Norris. The Knocka was probably the most talked about dog in Australia until he was upstaged by his kennel mate Made To Size, running a new Albion Park record. It might be too early to say now, but there’s every chance the same could happen again this Saturday night.
