Gunnadoo Magic “My Best Ever” Says Rob Britton
Distance queen Gunnadoo Magic – recently selected as a 2008 Victorian Greyhound of the Year finalist – is after successive Group 2 Maidment Memorial crowns at Sandown Park on Thursday night.
“On race performances Gunnadoo Magic is the best stayer I've trained by ‘a hundred yards'… She keeps going like a machine,” said 2007 Victorian Trainer of the Year, Robert Britton of Lara.
“Since late November last year her form has been very pleasing… She's not getting any younger but is racing as good as ever.”
An 11-time Group race finalist in 2008, Gunnadoo Magic last night semaphored a 42.56sec heat win, notching her seventh win from 13 starts over 715 metres at the Lightwood Road venue.
Gunnadoo Magic is also chasing her fifth win in a row, following victory at Cannington, in WA, in late December and a clean sweep of the Group 3 SA Distance Championship series at Angle Park earlier this month.
If Gunnadoo Magic makes it back-to-back Maidment Memorial wins, the $25,000 winner's purse would catapult her stakes to $230,825.
Britton has three finalists; he landed the other heat with Kulu Spirit, who clocked 42.53sec – a half length faster than Gunnadoo Magic.
Which Wabbit finished eight and three-quarter lengths astern of Kulu Spirit.
“Two-out Kulu Spirit would beat Gunnadoo Magic, but he's not as tractable in a full field… In fact he's the fastest greyhound in my kennel – over any distance.
“He's been unlucky in a few Group races where he's finished on their heels but has still missed a place.”

She was the easiest Dog to work in the Runs. Let Her go – She’d have a wee – walk about 30 meters – have a poop – do 5 “360’s” flat out – walk back to the gate waiting to go back for Breakfast!!
Loved backing her
Nellie Noodles in my best ever. While she won at group one level, she didn’t quiet live up to her ability. At her best she was head and shoulders above any stayer I have been involved with. If you can find a video of her track record run at the Meadows, I think this is the greatest run of any stayer in a city field that I have seen
I still remember her last race at Wenty when she got hurt. We had a dog in that night and I was waiting for my uncle to get him out of the kennels and I was lucky enough to be able to give her lots of pats when she came out on her way home. Used to love watching her race…blue bitches are my favourite and she was just such a little darling!
