Locals Dominate The Group 1 Brisbane Cup Final

Written By Anthony Millican, Brisbane Greyhound Racing Correspondent On Monday 7th December 2009

Queensland greyhounds have dominated the Group One Sky Racing Brisbane Cup Heats, filling all but one spot in the $55,000 to the winner final.

The four of the five heats, which all featured both interstate and local greyhounds, were won by home-town performers with the only other winner from Melbourne, and hot favourite to win Australian Greyhound of the Year, Cindeen Shelby.

Cindeen Shelby kicked off the heats in style with a 29.99 win over Banzai Pipeline in Heat One, living up to punters confidence of $1.60.

The triple Group One winner led the way after posting a strong first sectional of 5.78.

Heat Two saw Barry Morris’ consistent chaser, Side Cutter, crack a four-start string of second placings, finishing strongly ahead of Group One winning dog, Dashing Corsair.

Side Cutter ran a smart 30.12 to win with Dashing Corsair finishing in 30.15, putting them both through to the final. Side Cutter has drawn box six in the final with Dashing Corsair drawing box four.

Emerging youngster Mr Metz won Heat Four in only his twelfth start in his career. Mr Metz has been dominating the Capalaba straight track, but failed to finish off the 520m a week ago at Albion Park in the Greyhounds Queensland Young Guns final.

Making amens for that defeat, Mr Metz shot to the lead from the start and improved throughout the race to run a sharp 30.05 from box eight.

Tony Brett’s Bogie Bomber finished less than a length behind him after weaving through the field on the back straight from an awkward box six. Bogie Bomber has also qualified for the final, and has drawn a far better box one.

Another emerging Queenslander stole the show from last week’s Melbourne Cup winner Lord Ducal, with Ron Ball’s Vociferous showing his class in the twelfth start of his career also.

Lord Ducal couldn’t seem to get a handle of the Albion Park track while Vociferous drew on all his track experience to take the win. Vociferous has drawn box eight in the final.

It seemed the best was left until last, with local youngster My Amigo blitzing the field from box one, and recording the fastest time of the night of 29.93.

Trained by Sandra Hunt, there was never any doubt for My Amigo who showed how to rail the Albion Park turns to finish ahead of Pure Surf, who is also a regular Brisbane sprinter.

My Amigo has drawn box three in the final while Pure Surf qualified also and has drawn just inside him in box two.

Brisbane Greyhound Racing Club general manager Luke Gatehouse said the night showcased the strength of Queensland greyhounds at the moment.

“This final field just goes to show how well our dogs are doing on the Group stage, and it’s even better to see the new talent coming through like Vociferous and Mr Metz,” said Mr Gatehouse.

“Next week is sure to be a very thrilling final and with the box draw the way it is, there is definitely going to be value for the punters.”

The Group One Sky Racing Brisbane Cup final will be held at the Brisbane Greyhound Racing Club next Thursday, 10 December 2009.

To Celebrate, the Club is throwing their annual Beach Party for Summer with live entertainment, music, jumping castle and a losing ticket competition to win weekend for two to the Gold Coast.

The night will also be hosted by Queensland Summer Surf Girl contestant Natalie Ward from Marcoola Surf Club who will be campaigning to raise money for her Club.
