Miata Awarded Australia’s Best Greyhound Race For May 2012

AGRA’s Run of the Month for May 2012 has been awarded to superstar stayer West Australian Miata, after her record breaking performance at Sandown on May 17th. This is the Champion’s second Run of the Month award having already won it March of this year.

Miata smashes the Sandown Track Record Miata confirmed her status as the most exciting greyhound of her generation after she slashed six lengths off the previous track record in her heat of the RSN Sandown Cup. The pride of Western Australia began well from box 2, finding a clear lead through the first turn and opening a four length break over Wandy Neg passing the finishing post the first time.

However down the back straight, the daughter of Bombastic Shiraz and Winsome Bluebird took off, carving out extraordinary sectional times on her way to a stunning 8.25 length win in a mind boggling 41.17 seconds.

Reigning Victorian Distance Champion Lady Arko held the previous track record at 41.54 seconds. The win was 20 lengths faster than the time she recorded on the rain affected track two weeks earlier in claiming the Lizrene. Undefeated in 14 starts beyond 530m, it was her 15th consecutive victory and 24th in 27 career starts. It was the eighth time in her career she has set a new time standard.

Miata was the runt of her litter, and her 27 year old trainer Paul Stuart had to hand feed the super star when she was as a pup. The striking red fawn has now blossomed into arguably the best greyhound of the 21st century and has been dubbed ‘the Black Caviar of greyhound racing.’ “She went super,” said Stuart with a smile. “The time was out of this world, but I’m just happy she’s done everything right.

Miata is a Red Fawn bitch whelped October 2009 by Bombastic Shiraz from Winsome Bluebird (Lansley Bale x Winsome Duchess). She raced by Nicole Wheeler-Whye & Paul Stuart and trained by Paul Stuart at Oakford in Western Australia. She has now won 22 races and been placed three times from her 26 starts. Miata’s overall prizemoney stands at $312,145.

As usual there were some outstanding runs recorded in May but another city distance record lower in the manner in which Miata displayed made her a clear winner for the monthly award.

AGRA congratulates the Miata’s connections after being judged the AGRA Run of the Month for May 2012. For the second time this year Miata joins the January winner Heston Bale, February winner Radley Bale and last month’s winner Barcia Bale as the AGRA runs of the month for 2012.
