Velocette Upstages Perth Cup With Cannington Record

Big race performer Velocette continued to annex group greyhound races Saturday night when he flew around the Cannington setting a new track record to win the $20,000 to the winner Group 3 Perth Cup Consolation.
The Group 1 2009 Australian Cup winner and Group 2 2009 Horsham Cup winning son of Bombastic Shiraz ~ Texan Lady was a certainty beaten in his heat of the Sky Channel Perth Cup the previous week, meeting all sorts of trouble when finishing ½ length second behind outsider Talei Bond.
But an ideal red box draw in the Group 3 Perth Cup Consolation was all Velocette needed to continue his winning ways for owner Ron McCullagh and trainer Graeme Bate.
Velocette jumped onto the arm early clocking 5.69 first sectional before going to the back straight in 13.36 and then off the back straight in 18.73, however his run home time was sensational stopping the clock at 29.92 lowering the previous record of 29.93 set in April 2007 by another Victorian Cromlah Bale.
The win takes Velocette's record to 44 starts for 19 wins and 11 placings and adds another $20,000 prizemoney to his career prizemoney of more than $270,000.
Saturday's Perth Cup Consolation win was Velocette’s third Group Race win in a row after winning both the Horsham and Australian Cups.
Prior to theese last triumphs, Velocette had previously made 6 group race finals without success. Amongst the unplaced efforts were the Group 1 2008 Melbourne Cup, with his previous best group finish being a 6.75 length second to Keeko Bale in the 2008 Group 2 Traralgon Cup.
Greyhounds WA delivered once again with a spectacular evening of greyhound racing, a cup crowd of 4300 down a little from last year’s crowd but very healthy indeed and a bit more comfort for on-course patrons. The big crowd didn’t mind a bet with solid on-course figures, while off-course a record of $418,000 was set.
The curtain fell on very successful $500,000 Autumn Chasing Carnival that appears to be continuing to get bigger and better each year. The West has again showcased Australia’s best chasers in the Sky Channel Group 1 Perth Cup ($140,000 to the winner) and Group 1 Galaxy ($80,000) and there is no doubt West Australia is a great place to race.
