Heartbreaking end to Hostile’s career

HOBBY trainer Darren Beasley has been left heartbroken after his star greyhound Hostile suffered what is likely to be a career-ending injury on Saturday night at , just seconds after qualifying for the final.

Hostile ran second in his semi-final behind Recruitment, before going amiss shortly after the line in the run to the catching pen.

“

He fractured his metatarsal and he is getting operated on today (Monday),” Beasley said.

“At this stage you would probably say it is a career-ending injury. He is going to have quite a few months off for recovery and by the time he starts jogging again it could be anywhere upwards of five months.

“He is top grade and he can't afford to lose three to five lengths in any grade, let alone top grade, so it will make it difficult for him to come back, but you never say never.”

Beasley recalled the horrible moment when he found out that Hostile had been injured, having been celebrating immediately after the run.

“I didn't even realise that he got hurt. The owners were at the front of the grandstand and I was walking back from the boxes smilling and we were giving the thumbs up to each other.

“When I got back to the finishing post Ron Arnold told me to get to the vet because the dog was in a bit of trouble – so the first 50 metres back was good, the last 50 metres was gut-wrenching.

“The whole thing is shattering. You get a dog good enough to compete in these races – he is a dream come true for us blokes – he is life-changing, and then this happens.

Hostile has been a terrific chaser for Beasley and his owners, as a winner of 13 races from 36 starts and $125,600 in prize money earnings. The son of and Restless Style won the 2014 Cup Night Sprint at Park, while earlier this month he finished third in the 1 at .

Beasley said that his black powerhouse will be returning home to his residential property, located just 10 minutes outside of the Melbourne CBD.

“He'll come back here and recover, his owner lives next door to me, and we'll just have to play it by ear and see what happens,” he said.

“Hopefully he might get a couple of ladies to come and visit him.

The stud game is a very commercial market and it is a tough one, but who knows?”

Beasley, although understandably distraught, is still thankful for the incredible thrills that Hostile gave him during his highly-successful career on the track.

“We enjoyed the ride while we had it and the dog owes us nothing. He is a lovely dog to train and he gave 110 per cent every time. Even on Saturday night he had a horrific run but he still kept coming.

“His form in 2015 was outstanding and I said to the owner the other day that he was on the verge of winning a big one, but unfortunately now we wont get that opportunity.

“

I still cant believe that it has happened, but that's racing.”

Watch Hostile's last win, claiming a heat of the Golden Easter Egg from box one.

Absolutely heart breaking for Darren, Jamie and Andrew. He was a huge chance in the final. Joe has taken us on one hell of a ride!! Our dream has been to breed a dog like him and what a thrill he’s given us. Lets hope he can get some girls!!

At least he’s still alive! Wether he makes it back to the track or not the owners will be glad he’s still alive and can have a career at stud!
