A Look At The 2014 Dapto Puppy Auction Results

The 2014 Dapto Puppy Auction took place on Sunday, 4 May. A total of 350 lots were catalogued to be auctioned. A number of pups were withdrawn on the day so approximately 280 greyhounds went under the hammer at an average of just over $2,800. There's no word yet on how many were buy-backs.

Two litters in particular heavily in terms of high prices: – Fancy Mandy (Kiowa Sweet Trey – Chantilly Doll) and – Dusty Retreat (Spiral Nikita – Undermatched).

Fancy Mandy was a handy race bitch, winning 16 races and over $86,000 in prize money. The eight month old Collision litter offered at the auction is her second litter. Her first litter were by Brett Lee and are 26 months old. Of seven pups whelped, four have been named to race with just two from the litter winning just one race each so far (Midnight Rhythm and Zulu Mystique).

Despite her first litter not setting the world just yet, one of her black dogs went for the highest price of the auction; $20,000. The other dog in the litter collected $7,500 while the bitches went for $15,000, $11,000 and $10,000.

Dusty Retreat has a very handy litter of pups racing at the moment, trained by Christine Oldfield. They are by Collision and have just started their careers (Bacash and Frattini). Frattini has reportedly been the subject of some big figure offers and she has been impressive to date, winning both her starts at in slick time. At the auction, the highest price a dog pup by Dusty Retreat went for was $12,000. The other dogs in the litter attracted $10,000, $8,000 and $9,000, while the two bitches went for $10,000 and $8,000.

High priced pups generally do not go on to win the Auction series so it will be interesting to see how these pups develop over the coming years.

Aside from the high priced purchases, there was some value around for those that did their research and stuck around for the duration of the auction.

You could have started off your breeding empire with Lot 1, a bitch by Collision – Alexia Flex (). Her grand-dam is the invaluable Gold Rush Bale. Princess Bale herself has thrown the likes of Tomac Bale, Desalle Bale and Barcia Bale to name just a few. Lot 1 went for $4,200 which is great value considering the proven breeding line.

Another top purchase (which was a genuine purchase) was Lot 213, a fawn bitch by Barcia Bale – Luminous (Collision – Tocsin). She went for a steal at just $1,700. Two other pups from the litter went for $3,400 and $4,000 earlier in the day. Luminous is a litter sister to multiple track-record holder Phenomenal.

Lastly, two pups from the Velocette – Chinatown Lilli ( – Chinatown Babe) litter went very cheaply. If you were after a strong greyhound you couldn't go past these. Chinatown Babe was the 2008 Australian Broodbitch of the Year. Chinatown Lilli is a litter sister to performers Chinatown Lad and Fallen Zorro. Three pups went through the auction for the bargain prices of $600, $800 and $1,200.

The next auction for greyhound pups takes place at Ipswich in August followed by the inaugural auction in November.
