Bells Fair Cruises To Moree Country Challenge Final
Written By James Dunn, Australian Greyhound Racing Contributor On Tuesday 1st December 2009
The Mark Vella-trained hound Bells Fair won Heat 1 of the Country Challenge in race two at Moree on Saturday.
Bells Fair led over the 421-metre distance to win with a one-and-a-quarter margin at 23.98 seconds.
He beat the overall series contender Future Fund who came third and was tipped as the greyhound to beat.
Bells Fair has secured his place in the GRNSW Country Challenge final. The final, with a $5000 prize to go to the winner, will be held at the Moree Greyhound track on Saturday, December 5.
The GRNSW Country Challenge is conducted across 28 tracks statewide with each hosting a leg of the series.
Trainer Mark Vella spoke highly of Bells Fair’s performance. “He is an experienced winner, he has got that will to win and he likes to compete.
“He’s a relaxed dog, he switches on 90 per cent of his starts and comes out wanting to win.
“He always puts a good effort in every start,” Vella said.
Bells has won more than 50 per cent of his starts. He’s had officially 97 starts and 49 wins.
He is racing next on Wednesday in Bathurst in the Margaret Brown Memorial, where he has the course record of 17.47 seconds over 307 metres for that race.
“At the Country Challenge I’d like to get box one, two or seven preferably as that’s where he won his last heat in Moree.
“It was his first time in Moree last weekend, he put in an honest effort, he was a bit lost in the new track, so expect him to improve on his time in the Country Challenge.
“I expect him to go well, we’ll find out Wednesday in the box draw which will tell a closer story,” Vella said.
