The fastest qualifier was current track recorder holder over 484 metres, Azure Allegro. She went just outside her best with a 27.17 win.
The Neville Robson trained sprinter led from the first turn and held on well to beat Amazing Phantom, who also qualifies, by 1 1/2 lengths.
Azure Allegro goes into the final as an unbeaten commodity over the 484 metres here, a similar record to the well performed Bralyn Maisie who won the cup a couple of years back.
Within Site ran the next best time of 27.29. She shares the current track record over the 411 metres, and she showed that early pace to set up a winning break down the back. Holding on well she beat the fast finishing Kamikaze Magpie by 2 3/4 lengths. Her early speed will be a vital factor in the final.
Reg Hazelgrove’s Whirly Storm was the next to reach the final when she got the better of Kidatee Alf down the side before winning in 27.41, whilst Big Cool Ronny made it two on the trot in winning heat five in 27.48. He came home strongly along the rails to win by 3 1/2 lengths.
Between them, the eight finalists have won over 120 races, and a cool $15,000 awaits the winner.
Robert Andrews returned to the winners list at Queen Elizabeth Park with a “bang,” landing a three winners. The first of these was Short Crust who won the Casino RSM Club stake. He railed through at the home turn and won by 1 1/2 lengths in 23.19. Next up was Miss Sterling who led from start to finish in the Relay For Life stake. She ran 27.35 in a 4 1/2 length romp. To top off the day, Within Radar showed great pace to circumnavigate the field at the first turn before hanging on valiantly to win by a head in 23.01.
Owner Tony Marras had two winners on the day when Yorklea Beauty won her maiden by 4 3/4 lengths in 23.22, and Yorklea Sunrise ran 23.06 in a three length victory. They both led all of the way, and are trained for Tony by Roy O’ Malley and Gary Peel respectively.
Hasty Flight ran 23.04 for Peter Simpson when he rattled home to win the Westlawn Finance stake by 3 1/4 lengths, and Marvellous made it two in a row when she won the distance stake in 35.85 for John Corrigan.
This week sees a swap between The Gardens and Casino in time slots, with the Casino Cup meeting moving to the Twilight Zone. This will give full focus to the Group Three feature, and we thank GRNSW for the opportunity. Our first race is at 3.47pm with the Cup around 6pm. We will also race TAB Twilight on Sunday 11th October with heats of the Rapidvite Pop Northfield maiden.
