Dad’s Mystery Wins Cowra’s Feature Sprint

He may not have been at his best in the heats, but sprinter Dad’s Mystery produced an excellent finishing burst to win the feature Steve Broad Concrete Final (327m) at the Cowra Greyhound Club meet on Friday night.
The Rodney McDonald-trained Bond pup reeled in an early break from Gooloogong’s Happy Feeling before inching away for a 2½ length success.
The 23-month old was a little off colour in the heats and was forced to work hard just to qualify for the final. But avoiding a scrimmage in the back straight proved vital to his chances as he recorded just his second race win in an emerging career.
It looked as though kennelmate Dana Erica would be the one seeking the headlines when she burst out of the boxes with the red rug to draw on level terms with Eric Barnes’ Happy Feeling (box eight), who was nippy out of the outside alley.
But Dana Erica was jammed heading up the back straight as Dad’s Mystery and replacement Forest Mist (box seven) scrambled for position.
It didn’t take long for the trailing pair to join Happy Feeling on the bunny and it was with a sense of inevitability that Dad’s Mystery careered away for a winning time of 19.34s. He has only finished outside the top two on one occasion in five starts on the Cowra loam as McDonald looks to set him over the shorter trips.
Happy Feeling never gave in and found the line well for second while Forest Mist was a further length away in third.
Cowra’s next meeting will be its last before Christmas on December 18.
