Domenico Lauricello Suspended For Four Months For Hydroxy-Carprofen Positive Swab

Greyhound Racing NSW Stewards have only just now advised of a GRNSW Stewards inquiry which took place nearly three weeks ago.
The inquiry related to a positive swab returned from the Domenico Lauricello trained greyhound Just Claudia after winning an Appin maiden back in March 2012.
The positive swab was to the substance Hydroxy-Carprofen; a metabolite of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) Carprofen.
Carprofen is an anti-inflammatory and mild pain reliever used mostly for joint based problems and in post-surgical settings. It is from the class of drugs known as COx-2 inhibitors and is the active ingredient of the proprietary branded Rimadyl.
GRNSW Stewards on 4 July 2012 inquired into the analyst’s reports that the urine sample taken from Just Claudia after that greyhound had won Race 9 the Linda Corney Appreciation Stakes Heat 4 Maiden 274m at Appin Way on 3 March 2012 had been analysed and found to contain the prohibited substance Hydroxy-Carprofen.
Evidence was taken from trainer Domenico Lauricella, Appin Club Steward Steve Malone, Appin Veterinary Surgeon Dr Shawn Frean, and Dr Adam Cawley from the Australian Racing Forensic Laboratory (ARFL). Written evidence was entered from the ARFL's Dr Craig Suann, Deputy Laboratory Director at Racing Analytical Services Ltd Victoria David Batty and Greyhound Racing NSW Steward Wayne Billett.
Mr Lauricella could not elaborate or offer to Stewards as to how the prohibited substance was found to be present in the urine sample taken from Just Claudia.
He was found guilty of a charge under 83 (2) (a) in that he presented Just Claudia for the race in question other than free of a prohibited substance in that the post race urine sample was found to contain Hydroxy-Carprofen.
Mr Lauricella was suspended for a period of four months. In determining penalty Stewards took into consideration Mr Lauricella’s previously unblemished record in relation to prohibited substances, his personal circumstances, and not guilty plea. Penalties for breaches of this rule involving similar substances were also considered.
Under GAR 83 (5) Just Claudia was disqualified from the race in question and placings amended accordingly. Just Claudia was also disqualified from the final of the event held on 10 March 2012.
