The Garry Edwards trained Double Twist set an extremely high standard in tonight’s Group Three RIP John Stollery Christmas Gift heats at Wentworth Park, clocking a sizzling 29.74 in heat three to narrowly defeat a valiant Peter Rocket.
Heat one kicked off with Victorian sprinter Allen Malik pinging the start brilliantly from box one and taking the lead at the first turn to romp away by 3 ½ lengths in a solid 29.96. Majella Ferguson’s Electro Storm finished second to book a spot in next week’s final, putting in a respectable performance from box eight.
Heat two was a veteran’s affair as four year old Ritza Ryder rounded up early leader Satchmo’s Hanky at the finish in a time of 30.08. The 2012 Bulli Gold Cup winner secured his twentieth win tonight and cracked the $130,000 prize money barrier, putting in a fantastic performance against dogs half his age.
Heat three provided a fantastic battle between two electrifying greyhounds in Double Twist and Peter Rocket. The Victorian trained Peter Rocket took the early lead before being challenged down the straight by sprinting sensation Double Twist, who easily recorded the fastest time of the night in 29.74.
The final heat saw Avondale Porche step out as the heavy favourite from box one, but punters were left lamenting after he was put out of the race at the first turn through interference and a moderate start. Brilliant beginner Edge raced away to book his place in the final clocking 29.90. Trained in the Hunter Valley by Graeme Barnett, this was Edge’s eighteenth win and his fourth win out of his past five starts.
