Dubbo ANZAC Carnival Draws Interstaters

Dubbo Anzac CarnivalThe three-day $35,000 Anzac Carnival race-fest begins at Dawson Park this afternoon with a cracking 20-race card split into two sessions.

The afternoon program consisting of ten races begins at 3pm, while the evening program of ten races will commence at 7.15pm.

The afternoon meeting will be highlighted by seven heats of the time-honoured Dawson Plaster Works Dash over the 400-metre journey.

The seven heat winners and the fastest second place-getter will progress to Sunday's Final worth $3000 to the winner.

This series is expected to be hotly contested with all the leading kennels represented from all parts of NSW, ACT and Victoria.

Last start Bathurst heat and final winner Goal, from the strong kennel, is likely to be one of the favourite elects to take out the series. Goal looks well placed in his heat coming up with the two box in race eight.

Last week's impressive winner Team Work will step up to the 400 metre distance and has again drawn the pink box in race seven for .

A small but select field will contest the Dubbo City Bakery Stakes over the 400 metre trip. In form Coolabah sprinter Venus Keeping looks well placed, but will need to be on her mettle up against the likes of the awkwardly drawn Bent Street (1), carnival regular Wally Thunder (2) and smart Victorian Hot Tempa (8). Local hope Lethal Grin (4) will also appreciate the small field and can motor when given room to move.

Kennelling for the afternoon program is 1.30pm to 2.15pm.

Last year's Country Challenge winner Smart Keeping has returned home and will be out to defend her title under the care of Jim Armstrong.

Smart Keeping has drawn heir apparant in classy sprinter , along with Loyal Moment and Groper Mick in what should an intruiging clash. Black Warhorse steps up to the testing 516-metre trip after having no luck at Wentworth Park last Saturday night.

In heat two has drawn ideally in the two for Glen Ginn, but faces Greg Board's classy sprinter Varvatos (7) who took out the Coonabarabran Series and won the Bathurst heat in a flying 30.21s but was then knocked down in the final.

Heat three sees local hope Chamuco (1) up against (2), Sweet Fancy (4) and Clear Sage (7) in another great clash.

Kennelling for the evening program is 5.45pm to 6.30pm.

Trainers flock city for popular event

Dawson Park has been transformed into a caravan and tent city.

Trainers from all over south-eastern Australia have converged on the Dubbo venue in preparation for the $35,000 Anzac Carnival commencing today.

Some of the trainers staying at the picturesque venue include Victorian trainer , Brian Honey (Wagga), Anthony Azzopardi (Londonderry), Tony Reilly (Young), Rex Cook (), Reg Gardoll (Illuka), Kevin Martin (Qld), Jodie Gilbert (), Brad Fogg (Newcastle), Roy Clewitt (Southern NSW) and Ben Spence () while other trainers have booked into motels and caravan parks throughout the city.

Massina, who trained last year's Challenge Dubbo Cup final winner Smart Keeping, said yesterday the Anzac Carnival weekend was the best on the greyhound calendar.

“In terms of the dog fields and program, the potential of the dogs, the organisation of the meeting and the way it shapes up, this is the best meeting of the year,” Massina, who has been coming to Dubbo for 15 years, said.

All trainers are keen to grab a slice of the wonderful prizemoney on offer to cover expenses for the trip which, for many, is incuded as part of their annual holiday.

As well as being able to visit the Western Plains Zoo and Old Dubbo Gaol, the Dubbo Show is also on, so all will be well and truly catered for.
