Goulburn Workers Club Cup Final – A Preview

The 2013 Workers Club Cup final jumps at 6:34pm on Sunday. The heats were only run on Tuesday, so there is less than a week for all finalists to prepare for the final. The fastest heat winner, Greysynd Jet, has drawn well in box three. The speed machine Knocka's Return has drawn better on the outside in box seven,  while prolific winner Irinka Luca has drawn the squeeze box. The winner of the final takes home $6,000.

Meditate has drawn the rails alley for the final and won his heat from the extreme outside box last week in 25.82. He started as a $13.60 outsider in his heat and it was his first win at Goulburn. The Kim Mulrine trained chaser has won two from box one and looks a place chance in this final if he begins as well as last week, as he should get room with Lachlan Bomber drawn on his outside.

Lachlan Bomber isn't drawn favourably in box two because he likes to use a bit of the track. The son of ex. Sonic Bomb chased hard to run into second position last week, but he was six lengths off the winner You Name Me. He needs to begin and lead to be in the mix amongst this field.

Last week's fastest heat winner lines up in box three. Greysynd Jet was well away from box eight in her heat and worked herself nicely around the leader turning for home, winning in 25.74. The trained bitch has good form from inside boxes and she looks one of the main chances to win the final.

For an inexperienced dog, Black Daddy handled himself nicely last week to qualify for the final behind Meditate. He finds himself in box four for this final and is coming up against a field full of experienced chasers. He has failed in his only start from the box, but has recorded a fast 25.74 at the track. He is a little inconsistent at box rise and being drawn near the middle of the field, he can't afford to be poorly away. He looks a place chance at best.

Irinka Luca notched up his 23rd win last week and has drawn box five for the final. It's not the best draw as he may find himself caught up with the field and will find it difficult to make the run he did last week that put himself into the race. His heat win of 26.19 was the slowest of the four heats. He has the ability to find the line and will need to draw on all of that to win the final.

Charlm Road has also drawn poorly in box six. He did not begin at his first look at the track last week but still put in an impressive finishing burst to finish second behind Greysynd Jet to qualify. He rarely begins on terms and the way he starts this race may impact on the chances of Knocka's Return in box seven. If Charlm Road begins on terms, then this may hamper Knocka's Return's efforts at getting into the race. I don't think Charlm Road can overcome the draw and win the final.

Knocka's Return went down narrowly to Irinka Luca in last week's heat at his first look at the track. He is much better drawn here in box seven this week. The inside draw at Goulburn didn't suit him last week as he began poorly and when this happens at Goulburn over the 457 from box one, you tend to get stuck on the rail with little room to move. He should get some more room from the outside and be able to power into the race a lot earlier. He is a very fast dog when he gets motoring, so if he has just a little luck early then he will easily feature in the top three.

You Name Me was one of the more impressive heat winners from last week. She chased solidly down the back straight after a fair getaway and blew her rivals away whilst negotiating the bend. Her winning time of 25.89 wasn't her best time at the track, which is 25.73. The only issue for this greyhound is that she has not won a race from an outside box (6, 7 or 8) after fifteen attempts. She has placed on five occasions.

The first reserve Magic Lair may struggle to feature in the final if he gets a start. His effort was solid last week, but he had the advantage of an inside box and was unimpeded for the entirety of the race. The second reserve Veetee Express could be in with a chance if she gets a run. She was only having her first look last week when she ran third and she will improve from that run. She is a Victorian city winner so certainly has the ability.

Greysynd Jet and Knocka's Return will probably vie for favouritism heading to the boxes. If Greysynd Jet gets away well and Knocka's Return is hampered early, then Greysynd Jet is strong enough to find the line. Greysynd Jet's will be hoping that Lachlan Bomber doesn't begin well from box two as he likes to move off the track. Irinka Luca has a tonne of class but box five is ordinary at the best of times, and he'll need a little good fortune to overcome the draw. It should be a good final and with very little between the heat times, it looks to be a close one.
