Trainer Named Sportperson Of The Month
He’s had winners all around the region, now greyhound handler Rodney McDonald has a chance to win another prestigious prize, Cowra’s Sportsperson of the Year.
McDonald was recently named January’s Sportsperson of the Month for his efforts with his Dana Lodge
The likeable trainer has trained winners at Cowra, Young, Bathurst, Wentworth Park and Canberra over the past months.
He has built most of his success behind boom bitch Dana Gretel, who has raced in the most lucrative events in the sport.
The Go Wild Teddy x Runaway Tiger flyer sped to a win during the heats of the National Futurity at Sydney headquarters Wentworth Park before just missing the final after placing third in the semi-final.
She also raced in the $150,000 Golden Easter Egg, and again narrowly missed the final when third in the semi.
Dana Gretel, with 11 from 28 career starts and $14,150 in prize money, has been in blistering form of late coming within one length of the track record in wins at Bathurst and Dapto. The win at Bathurst on Wednesday was by a whopping 11¼ lengths.
She also won a heat of the rich Dapto maiden series when an up-and-coming pup.
McDonald’s success has not been limited to just Dana Gretel.
He picked up an astonishing four winners from only four starters at Canberra’s TAB meeting last year.
Busta Muggleton and Itza Pearler have been McDonald’s other consistent dogs, with the former winning a race at Wentworth Park this year and Itza Pearler placing in a number of events.
Such has been McDonald’s recent success, he led the Wentworth Park trainers’ premiership for two months, with continued success expected to follow.
