Hooksy Is Truly Sensational

Jim Auld has been involved with greyhounds for fifty years and Saturday night was a fitting reward for all the hard work he and wife Tanya have spent breeding, rearing and training greyhounds at their Tatura property in Victoria.

“I have had some good dogs, but Hooksy is very special. He's a beautiful dog and we bred him and reared him and are very proud of how far he's come in such a short amount of time” said Jim.

The Auld family bred Hooksy back in March of 2012 out of , who was owned by Tanya and had forty-one career starts for nineteen wins and ten minor placings. The son of Hondo Black made he's debut at back in October of last year over the 500m, clocking 28.39 and sent tongues wagging at he's first appearance at Park in 29.27. Four days later, the 36kg heavyweight stamped he's authority as a star in the making, when he sizzled over the 515m journey in 29.15.

The Auld's decided to bypass the $250,000 and concentrated on the Three series, a race open to young greyhounds with less than ten wins from twenty starts.

“I really didn't want to hold him back, but dogs in these big series have had 30 or 40 starts and have a lot more experience than him.”

Hooksy stepped out in a heat of the New Sensation as the $1.40 favourite and exploded from box three, recording a low-flying time of 29.44. Greyhound enthusiasts were in awe of this superb youngster, who didn't disappoint in his semi-final, scoring comfortably once again from box three in 29.57 by twelve and three quarter lengths. All eyes were on box three last Saturday night, as the support from punters and spectators was enormous for the $1.60 favourite, who led from start to finish once again in a best of the night time of 29.37, to claim the Group Three $25,000 New Sensation final.

“My wife (Tanya) and I were thrilled. I knew he would go well, but didn't expect him to run that fast and he's such a beautiful dog, who hasn't stopped improving.”

Hooksy was originally targeted for the Group Two , however due to a conflict of scheduling Auld decided to bypass the series and will set Hooksy for the Harrison-Dawson at Sandown Park next month.

“I probably don't want to hold him back from the big races, but I'll be setting him for a few of the age classic races and see how he goes.”

Hooksy's dazzling victory on Saturday night took he's career statistics to twelve wins from seventeen starts and a prizemoney total of $60,430 and deservedly took the title as greyhound racing's newest sensation.
