Mr Prizz Dominates Pop Northfield Memorial Maiden Final

Written By Kevin Pitstock, Editor & Australian Greyhound Racing Expert Contributor On Saturday 24th October 2009

The perfectly boxed Mr Prizz took out the Final of the time honoured Pop Northfield Memorial maiden at Casino last Friday after finally drawing a wide box.

In his heats he had inside and middle boxes to cope with, but when the Jason Woods trained galloper came up with box seven, this gave him the galloping room he needed to show his natural speed.

Stepping out well from the traps he was soon in command, and raced away to win by 5 1/4 lengths. The time of 22.89 second is a race record. Connections came to Casino to trial before the series began and were well rewarded with the winners purse of $4,000.

The race has been won by some handy performers over the years including the well performed Black Ruler and Mystic Rumble who have been successful at the last two runnings. Mr. Prizz may emulate their feats.

Seven heats of the DG Waldron / Casino RSM Anniversary Trophy were run with the fastest qualifier being the Darren Russell trained Thanos who led throughout from box one in 27.26. Next best was Mecca Magic who also an all of the way winner in 27.33. Jan Finneran trains her for Steve and Debbie Casey.

Bellbird Park followed his 27.35 win of the week prior with a 27.42 success for Matthew Reid, whilst local trainer Peter Simpson has two runners in this week’s final with litter brothers Super Trump (27.45) and Hasty Flight (27.59) winning their respective heats.

The Pat Lavis trained Rajah Karanne kept the box one winners coming when she came again to win by a length in 27.84, and Annie Marie topped of the heat winners when she got up on the line in 27.99. The final field will include Sookie Tawdry who was the fastest second placegetter.

Veteran performer Straken belied his rising five year age status when he led from the first turn to win the Ranvet sprint in 23.15 for Athol Bradley, while Our Precious took out the Charcoal Inn distance stake by 1 1/2 lengths in a handy 35.64 for John Watts and Terry Jordan. All of her previous wins have been at Tweed Heads, so she would have appreciated the grass surface here.

In the remaining maiden races Quick Quick went “quick” for Don Kevill winning by 2 1/4 lengths in 23.63, and Arapaho Demon just held on to win in 27.76 for Tom Tzouvelis.

Racing this Friday will be highlighted by the DG Waldron / Casino RSM Anniversary Final with the winner to receive a $5,000 cheque.
