My Best Girl Proves Just That

THE Young and District Greyhound Racing Club in NSW, held one of their biggest greyhound racing events of the year on Saturday, the Greyhound Racing NSW (GRNSW) Country Challenge.

Steve Cocksedge from Windang took home first place with My Best Girl, followed by Jack Roy’s Igloo Osti and in third Rodney McDonald’s Buster Muggleton.

The 2007/08 GRNSW Country Challenge is taking place across 28 country legs, with more than $170,000 in prize money on offer.

The heat held at Alfred Oval on Saturday afternoon was attended by Harness Racing NSW chairman Percy Allan, who said it was great that Young was able to host such an event.

“It is a really important race for country clubs to hold, and those who competed on Saturday gained important points towards their final score, which could see them in the final at Wentworth Park in June,” Mr Allan said.

“Ultimately this race was working towards that final, although the local rounds are important in themselves and the winners took home a cup for their win.”

Young Shire Council sponsored the race, and mayor Gerry Bailey made a presentation to the winners, saying he was proud the council could be sponsors for such an important event.

The GRNSW Country Challenge Showdown will be a special event held at Wentworth Park two weeks after the completion of the 2007/08 racing year on Saturday July 12.

The race will bring together the top eight point scorers from the Country Challenge series (or top eight acceptors in case of unavailability’s) to compete for race prizemoney of $20,000 in a Grand Final like climax to the Country Challenge.

The winning greyhound will receive $10,000, second $3,000, third $2,000 and all unplaced greyhounds will receive $1,000.

The greyhound with the highest number of points at the end June will take home a $10,000 bonus.
