No Donuts Hungry For Success in Group 2 Richmond Derby final
PROMISING youngster No Donuts will contest his first Group race at just his seventh career start when he lines up in Friday nights Group 2 Richmond Derby final for Londonderry trainer Johannes Vanderburg and owner Brad Canty.
The son of Fabregas and Chevy Princess began well from the six alley in his heat last week, taking up a nice forward position behind early leader I'm Pedro heading into the back straight.
Approaching the home turn, the 31kg chaser was still two lengths from the leader, with notable finishers Lithgow Panther and Zipping Oscar also making a last ditch effort.
In a great go to the line, No Donuts was victorious by a head in a fast time of 30.58, much to the delight of Canty.
“Last week was awesome and I was so happy with how he went,” Canty said.
“To be so young and make a race like this is really exciting.”
At just 21 months of age, No Donuts is the youngest and most inexperienced greyhound engaged in the $40,000-to-the-winner final, however this doesn't deter Canty from believing that he can perform well.
“There's a heap of talented dogs in the race, but not much early pace so I'd like to see him have a bit of luck and get through the first turn ok.”
No Donuts best time at Richmond was recorded last month in a 4/5th grade event, where he beat Group 1 National Derby runner up Bad Boy Sniper in a fast time of 30.40 over the 535-metre trip. His maiden victory also came at Richmond back in December of last year, clocking an impressive time of 22.47 over 400m.
Vanderburg decided to make the trip up to Maitland a month later and wasn't disappointed, with No Donuts posting a blistering 24.97 over 450m.
Despite the allure of the approaching Group 1 Easter Egg series at Wentworth Park, Canty explained other plans were in store for this exciting pup.
“We are likely to contest the New Sensation race and go from there,” Canty said.
“I brought him and 26 other pups at the same time, including his mother Chevy Princess.”
“It will be great to see what he can do in the future, as he certainly looks the goods at the moment.”
No Donuts will exit from box two in Friday night's Group 2 Richmond Derby Final, which will be run and won at 8.58pm EDST.
