Rock Energy Drinks Paws Of Thunder Semi Finals Box Draws

Following ten heats on Saturday night at Wentworth Park a special early box draw for the semi finals of the Group 1 Rock Energy Drinks Paws of Thunder was completed today.

The details of the official draw are published below – the order of running of the semi finals will be finalized when the draw for the balance of Saturday’s program is completed tomorrow at the normal time.

Last year Cosmic Rumble set the time standard of 29.64 in the heats of this race. On Saturday Victorian visitor Cosmic Chief trained by Darren Brown for Brian Parkinson was the fastest heat winner, just shy of Cosmic Rumble’s time last year, with a 29.70.

The semi finals draws see the four fastest qualifiers drawn in separate races – Cosmic Chief has drawn box 8 in a semi which includes Proven Jet (a 30.05 heat winner for Victorian trainer Michael Carter), drawn in box 5.

Second fastest heat winner, Nationals Sprint Champion Smooth Fancy which ran 29.80 for trainer Anthony Azzopardi and owner Terry Kingcott, is drawn in box 6 in another semi which includes 30.03 heat winner Sheza Good Lass drawn in box 7 for Wilberforce owner trainer Vince Bennett.

Third quickest in the heats was Red Flame (29.82), trained by John Vanderburg for Roupen Nercessian. Nercessian is Principal of Hotham Body Repairs, sponsor of the GBOTA’s premier distance event at Wentworth Park, the Group 1 Association Cup 720m in early January. Red Flame has box 3 in its semi and its opponents include Rev Limiter (a 30.01 heat winner for Tina Womann) in box 5.

Dennis Trewin brought two to race for Tina Womann – Greywinds Doll was their other runner and it set the early standard of fast times recording 29.97 in the first heat. Greywinds Doll which has drawn box 3 in its semi, is opposed by New Divide (box 2) which won its heat in 30 dead and which has been a big improver at Group level for highly respected NSW mentor Ken Cheetham.

Joining Tina Womann with two qualifiers in the semis are: Anthony Azzopardi, who also qualified Seek And Destroy (third); Julie Fletcher with Magnifique (second) and Repeated (third); Marie Burton with Nicholas’s Habit (won in 30.14) and Gold Nebo (second); and Kristy Sultana with Odessa Shiraz (third) and Supreme Odessa (second).

South Australian trainer Petar Jovanovic brought three for the heats, and qualified his least fancied runner Where’s Cisco, which won in 30.27, returning a handsome dividend of $36.10 on the NSW TAB.

The semi finals are chock full of talent and provide the main attraction for Saturday night’s ten race program at Wentworth Park. Qualifiers out of the semis will contest for the $100,000 winner’s purse of the 2010 Rock Energy Drinks Paws Of Thunder the following Saturday October 2.
