Tifi And Chris O’Brien Search For Success In Nowra Puppy Classic

Nowra trainer Chris O'Brien will rug up two runners in Saturday nights Group Three Nowra Summer . The two finalists, Solar Pak and Someone Tifi, are litter-mates bred by O'Brien and they will line up from boxes one and six respectively.

Solar Pak and Someone Tifi were whelped in January 2012, so they are just over two years of age. They are by Mogambo and out of fantastic broodbitch Tifi ( – Chili Berger).

Many would recognise Tifi's breeding. An earlier 2005 mating of Bombastic Shiraz – Chili Berger produced stud dog . Tifi was whelped in 2006 and is a litter sister to handy performers Did I Entertain and Danny Phantom. Tifi herself was a very versatile bitch, winning over 500, 600 and 700. She has numerous wins to her name, but it's her legacy as a broodbitch that she will be most remembered for. She most recently took out the 2013 NSW BroodBitch of the Year award for the feats of her famous daughter Double Twist (Where's Pedro – Tifi).

“She was a pretty good racer, she could sprint and stay, but she is a better broodbitch”, O'Brien said.

There's a nice little story behind Tifi and how she ended up in O'Brien's kennels. It all came about after the death of close friend and a greyhound called Chappo.

“A good friend John Chapman died and I got a greyhound and named him Chappo in honour of John. A few of John's friends, who I didn't know that well at the time, all started coming to the races to watch the dog as a way of paying their respects to John. Anyway, they ended up wanting a greyhound and approached me. I said that we should buy a well bred bitch that could be used as a broodbitch later on. It was at the time Bit Chili was around and had a litter advertised. He had two bitches and I went out and chose Tifi. We picked her up for $3,500.”

For O'Brien and the syndicate it was a very big thrill to breed Double Twist.

“We are happy to sell them as it provides us with a dividend. It was amazing to breed Double Twist. She is one of the best dogs I've seen with her chase and tenacity at just 25kgs. She has real good track sense and is just a great little race bitch.”

Solar Pak and Something Tifi are by Mogambo (Where's Pedro – ). O'Brien decided to use Mogambo to see how breeding strength to strength would go.

“I wanted to see how it would go breeding strength to strength. I wasn't sure what would happen and as it turns out we've ended up with strength. The best one looks to be Solar Pak and we should see the best of her over more distance. Someone Tifi is quite strong. We had him paid up for the Puppy Classic so threw him in. He's made the final but I'll be looking to step him up to 600.”

The next lot of Tifi's are 15 months old and the robust youngsters are being prepared for break-in. The line also looks set to continue with Tifia, the 2012 Group Three winner at Wentworth Park, set to be bred with Where's Pedro. Tifia is out Tifi's first litter, which was by Collision.

“Tifia has finally come on season, we've been waiting for 16 months. She will be going to Where's Pedro.”

In the meantime, O'Brien will be hoping one of his Mogambo chasers takes out the Group Three on Saturday night, as it will add another Group winner to Tifi's already impressive list.
