Gun Slingers Hit Rocky In Search Of Young Gun Glory

Two heats of the age restricted young guns feature on a full ten race card this Wednesday night at Callaghan Park Rockhampton. Restricted to greyhounds whelped on or after the 19th of December 2010, the event will be contested over the tricky 407m journey. With the first four from each heat progressing to the final Wednesday week, trainers have come from afar to contest this great series. After poor nominations last week forced the rescheduling of heats, the club will be proud with the quality of dogs engaged this week. With increased prizemoney in Queensland to finish this week, it is a chance for the winner to pick up a nice purse prior to the end of this financial year.

Heat One – Race 6 RQ YOUNG GUNS HEAT 1 407m at 8.35pm

Highfields trainer Mark Saal makes the long trip north with his impressive brindle bitch Simmerly ( – Bundy Babe). Racing in career best form she will be the justifiable favourite for the event after coming off strong runs at Tweed Heads, Capalaba and . The recent finalist and fastest heat winner clocked an impressive 23.14 BOD at Border Park in the heats of the Galaxy and a run anywhere near that will ensure victory and another feature final here. With the noted beginner drawn in box 4, she should have the class and ability to win this heat even without a look on the track. With over $25,000 in prizemoney and overall record of 26 starts for 11 wins and 10 placing's, look for her brilliance to shine through in this.

Local speedster Tormented for Springsure trainer William Boon looks the likely challenger after coming up with box 8. Having raced through his grades at Callaghan Park, the 34 kilogram son of – Velocity Thunder is a flying machine having won 7 of his 11 overall starts. With form over the track and distance of 8 starts for 6 wins and 1 third, the striking black dog will be the one to challenge the favourite. A best time of 23.43 on the track set two weeks ago will ensure that his followers remain confident even against the flying visitor, as he looks to use his track knowledge to his advantage here.

Local trainer Allen Svensen and his wife Ros engage their talented chaser Tarawi Grace (Bit Chilli – Splendour) in box 7. With an overall record of just 1 win from 9 starts, the April 2011 whelp does not have the record that is indicative of her ability. She does have a free for all best time of 23.54 to her credit over this track and distance. An untidy greyhound early, she seems to find trouble in her races, especially over this 407 m journey, where the start is all so important. The 25 kilogram black bitch has a powerful motor and if she can begin like she does in her trials, she will be hard to stop should she see the bunny first at box rise. Unlucky last week when she was dragged down, a win here certainly wouldn't surprise for Rockhampton's unluckiest greyhound.

Heat Two – Race 7 RQ YOUNG GUNS HEAT 2 407m at 8.55pm

Locally trained chasers look to have the advantage in the second heat despite southern challengers making the long trip north. With track experience to their credit, heat two looks to be dominated by three chasers all with exceptionally sprinting ability. With the box draw playing its part, the likely winner appears to be Jar Of Hearts for Emerald mentor and leading Rocky trainer Christine Pollard. By Buckingham Chuck – Kissin' Make Up, the 25 kilogram pocket rocket has excelled since moving north in April this year. Starting her career in Brisbane and , the red fawn and white greyhound has found another leg in Rocky. With her track and distance form reading 7 starts for 4 wins and 3 placing's, she can use her brilliant early pace to her advantage here. Drawn box 7, Jar Of Hearts will have plenty of admirers after a best of night performance last week, as well as being in the astute hands of Rocky's leading trainer.

Rockhampton mentor boxes the promising Galileo Beach in box 6 for heat number 2. With his most recent runs being 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th, her form looks good in this as each of her past runs were won in Best of Night times. With a best run over the track and distance of 23.54 (when second) the daughter of El Galo – has plenty of ability for the popular mentor. With 18 overall starts for 3 wins and 7 placing's, her form and experience ensures that she will be hard to beat here, especially if she can lead and turn for home in front.

William Boon's two pronged attack on the RQ Rocky Young guns continues in the second heat with the May 2011 whelp Equitas (Knocka Norris – Wahine). With 3 wins from 5 starts, the Springsure mentor will make the long round trip to town confident of having two finalists next week, despite the 30 kilogram sprinter returning after a 3 week layoff. With a win from box 5 already, he does has great box speed and will be well fancied to make it win number 4 overall.

Race 8 – DAVID BRASCH APPRECIATION BEST 8 407m at 9.14pm

Rockhampton's best greyhounds drop back to 407 m for this week's best 8 event. The race named in appreciation of one of Queensland Greyhound's greatest contributors, it is sure to be a competitive event especially as it features North Queensland's best greyhound. With the winner picking up a cool $1775.00 prizemoney, the result is likely to be determined at box rise as to who will collect the spoils here.

Gin Gin mentor Ronald Brook returns to Rockhampton with North Queensland's best greyhound The Boss. Perfectly named, the November 2010 son of Big Daddy Cool – Ledaro Elly has an imposing record of 28 starts for 16 wins and 6 placing's. With exceptional first and second section ability, Beware The Boss is a greyhound capable of winning anywhere in Australia. The recent Cup placegetter is coming off career best form with 2 wins and 2 seconds from his past 4 appearances. Having only finished worse the 4th on two occasions, the striking black dog looks set again to be the one to beat after drawing box 3.

Rockhampton race caller Liam Mulry will hope his luck as an owner continues as his greyhound Star Pupil looks most likely to challenge the favourite after drawing box 1. The William Boon prepared speedster has imposing form over the Callaghan Park circuit with 3 wins from his last 4 starts including a best of night win in heats of the Rocky Cup over 510m. No luck in the final was followed by two further wins (510m) in Best of Night times. More noted over the 510m journey, the son of Where's Pedro – can win this after drawing ideally and coming off a short two week break.

The offspring of El Galo regularly feature in the winners list at Rocky and it looks no different this week as So Chique looks another strong chance here. The Christine Pollard trainer brindle bitch is looking to make it three wins on the trot after coming up with box 4. Out of the bitch So Faithful, she has raced at the track and distance 26 times for 9 wins and 7 placing's with close to $10,000 in prizemoney. Although awkwardly drawn, the 407m start definitely favours greyhound drawn inside box 6, with the first few metres crucial for all runners and their winning chances.

The first event on the card kicks off at 6.57pm local time for what is sure to be a fantastic night of greyhound racing.
