Queen Lauryn Impressive, Size Can Matter Outted
The Queensland heats of the Rapidvite National Sprint Championship were nothing short of sensational last night, with some top-liners doing everything right and one potential stud prospect throwing that career away.
The heats started in controversy when Reg Kay’s Group 1 2008 Perth Cup winner, Size Can Matter railed up under Kaycee Diva and proceeded to to ignore the chase and took a greater interest in Kaycee Diva’s ear, fighting that greyhound off the track.
Queen Lauryn who was unleashing a run, took advantage of the situation and raced away to win heat 1 in a moderate 30.39 from Overflow Breaker, with Ultra Swift in 3rd.
Stewards quite rightly charged Size Can Matter with “marring”, a euphimism for “fighting”; and stood the dog down for 28 days. Size Can Matter will be required to trial satisfactorily before the stewards prior to any return to racing.
Size Can Matter’s indiscretion cost trainer Reg Kay more than the chance to represent Queensland at the Rapidvite National Sprint Championship Final at Wentworth Park. As a brilliant Group 1 Perth Cup winner earlier in the year and litter brother to fellow Group 1 winner Made To Size, the dog was destined for a lucrative stud career.
It would now be unlikely the dog would be well patronised if he were to go to stud, as many astute breeders won’t breed with sires who are proven to be non chasers or “fighters”.
Queen Lauryn although doing enough to win, looked a little one paced in the run and trainer Tony Brett was not getting excited by the win.
“I thought she was taking time to pick them up in the back straight,” said Brett.
“But by the home turn when she was sweeping up around the outside, I thought she was going to win.
“It was a little disappointing.”
Reg Kay’s fortunes turned full circle just two races later when recent Group 1 Winter Carnival Cup winner and current Albion Park 520 metre track record holder, Made To Size won well to advance to the Rapidvite National Sprint Championship Queensland Final in a respectable winning time of 30.16 beating Iron Steed by 4.5 lengths and Bogie Blaze a further 1.75 lengths back in 3rd.
Reg Kay’s night lifted again when enigmatic but super quick sprinter, Knocka Norris raced to the lead from the boxes in the last heat.
From there it was always going to be a one act affair and “Knocka” looked the champion he as promised to be running a sensational 29.70 best of night and beating the ultra-consistent Tricode Flojo by 7.5 lengths with Super Hornet a further 5.25 lengths to 3rd.
Knocka Norris had recently been trained by Jason Thompson in Victoria but returned to Kay’s kennels back in May to qualify to run in the Queenlsand heats of the Nationals and to be prepared for what proved to be unsuccessful tilts at the Winter Carnival races coming up in Queensland.
Kay’s undoubted abilities as a trainer will be fully put to the test during the forthcoming week, as Knocka Norris has made a habit of running sensationally in heats of big races and then has “gone missing” the following week in the final.
If Kay can get the right dog to turn up next week for the Rapidvite National Sprint Championship Queensland Final, there is no doubt “Knocka” has the ability to easily take out the event.
The box draw was performed trackside last night and Knocka Norris has drawn the same box as his heat run for the final and Queen Lauryn has drawn uncomfortably inside him in box 4. Made To Size has drawn very well out in box 8 and could well be the dog that carries the bulk of the punter’s money in to the final.
