Queensland Sprinters Vie For 2014 National Sprint Championships

Queensland's best sprinters will press their claims for a shot at Australia-wide glory when they line up for three heats of the Sprint Queensland Championships on Thursday night.

Eight greyhounds will progress to next Thursday's final with the winner of that race earning the right to represent the Sunshine State at the national final in Western Australia on August 23rd.

Here is a look at the main chances in all three heats;

Race 5 – AGRA Championships Queensland Heat 1 – 8:05pm

One Winter Carnival Cup and Group Two winner Flash Reality (6) features in the opening heat. The Tony Brett trained son of and (Bond – Sweet Elite) has imposing record at with eight wins from 11 starts at the track. He has already amassed over $140,000 in stakes earnings and has a near-record best of 29.58. He is clearly the one to beat.

Top Story (4) has won 16 races at Albion Park and boasts a personal best of 29.65. He is never too far away from the front when it matters the most.

Rose Of Galo (8) returns to Albion Park after a three-week stint of straight racing at where she won her last two. She could benefit from the change of scenery and can carve out zippy early sections.

Bill's Fantasy (7) won three races in a row before finishing fifth to Flash Reality here last week. He has a best of 29.93 and could be competitive on his best form.

Chant (1) is another Tony Brett runner who loves the inside draw. He has won three of his last four and is, at the very worst, one for the exotics.

Race 6 – AGRA National Sprint Championships Queensland Heat 2 – 8:25pm

Cyndie's Special (2) looks well drawn for trainer Bill Elson in a reasonably open second heat. She has won nine from 32 at the track and never missed a place in four starts from box two. If she is anywhere near her best of 29.88 she will be hard to beat.

Give You Credit (4) returns to Albion Park racing after falling in a semi-final of the Maturity at The Meadows two weeks ago. If he gains some room in transit, he will be finishing the race off strongly.

Yogi Blue (8) is never too far away in any of his races. He performs better from the inside but has won two from seven when exiting box eight. He will be thereabouts.

Placid Planet (1) is an interesting runner. He has had just two starts in 2014, the last of which was a swift 29.89 effort here in an easier class. He has a good record from the inside and could be the knockout dog, if there is one.

Race 7 – AGRA National Sprint Championships Queensland Heat 3 – 8:44pm

Another very open final heat with Winged Elite (4) looking to have hit form at the right time. The John Hutchinson trained son of Elite Blue Size and Mellifluous (Placard – ) was a finalist in the Group One Winter Carnival Cup where he finished seventh behind Flash Reality. Since that race he has strung two wins on end from box one. If he handles the move to the blue rug he will go very close.

Exhibitionist (3) won here two starts back in 29.99 before falling last time out. She has won four from 12 at the track and could be near the lead early.

Gumlow Star (7) surprised at big odds four starts back in a heat of the Winter Carnival Cup, beating a good field in 30.11. She will be some sort of hope chance if she can find the front.

Spirited Flame (2) is never far away and has won 10 of 37 starts at the track. She has finished in the top three at eight of her past ten starts albeit predominantly over 600 metres. She looks a place hope.

Chariots Offiah (5) has a good record at Albion Park, winning 7 from 24. This looks to be a bit of a class rise on his recent wins and he may be out of his depth.

Fred Sealey (8) has a good record from box eight with three wins from seven attempts. His record of one win from 14 starts at the track is a big concern though.
