Smith Given Six Months For Positive Swab
Stewards convened an Inquiry on the 23rd of October 2008 in relation to the urine sample taken from the greyhound Elite Sovereign which competed on the 26th of August 2008 at the Brisbane Greyhound Racing Club in Race 9 (placed 4th) and subsequently returned positive to the drug's Theobromine, Theophylline and Paraxanathine, which are commonly recognised as metabolites of Caffeine in animals.
Stewards directed trainer Mr. Steven Smith of Beachmere to appear and evidence was taken from Mr. Smith and Mr. Smith Snr.
Stewards charged the trainer under GAR 83 (2) (a) (d) which states;
(2) The owner, trainer or person in charge of a greyhound
(a) nominated to compete in an Event
(d) shall present the greyhound free of any drug
Mr. Smith pleaded guilty as charged and Greyhounds Queensland Stewards sunsequently disqualified Mr Smith for 6 months and fined him a further $250.
Stewards also disqualified the Elite Soverereign from the race at the Brisbane Greyhound Racing Club meeting on the 26th of August 2008.
