Gardiner Gets 5 Months For Codeine Positive Swab

GRSA Stewards completed an inquiry on 26th October 2009 into the circumstances relating to the obtaining of the positive swab to codeine from a Tanya Gardiner trained greyhound at a Mount Gambier greyhound meeting.

On the day in question the Victorian trained Redgum Assassin run seventh of eight runners in the last race on the card, the Open grade 277m race, being beaten 10.75 lengths having been backed in from $6.00 to start fourth favourite at $3.90.

Subsequent testing of the reserve portion of the urine sample confirmed the presence of Codeine and its metabolite Norcodeine.

Gardiner was charged with a breach of the GRSA Rules Of Greyhound Racing R83 which reads:

R83 Greyhound to be free of prohibited substances
(2) The owner, trainer or person in charge of a greyhound-
(a) nominated to compete in an Event;
(b) presented for a satisfactory, weight or whelping trial or such other trial as provided for pursuant to these Rules; or
(c) presented for any test or examination for the purpose of a period of incapacitation or prohibition being varied or revoked

shall present the greyhound free of any prohibited substance.
(3) The owner, trainer or person in charge of a greyhound presented contrary to sub-rule (2) shall be guilty of an offence.
(4) A greyhound presented for an Event contrary to sub-rule (2) shall be disqualified from the Event or any benefit derived from a trial or test.

Gardiner pleaded guilty to the charge and was disqualified for a period of ive(5) months effective midnight 26th October 2009.

Stewards acting under rule R83(4) disqualified Redgu Assassin from the Event and amended the placings accordingly.

Gardiner has already been warned off in Victoria after a kennel inspection revealed the premises to be unfit for the homing and training of greyhounds.
