Ian Chapman Called To Stewards Inquiry Over Atenolol Positive Swab
Written By Kevin Pitstock Tuesday 7th August 2012
On 9th July 2012 Stewards informed Mr. Ian Chapman by hand delivered letter that the greyhound Chappy’s Angel had shown the presence of Atenolol from the urine sample taken at the Southern Greyhound race meeting held at Strathalbyn on Sunday 3rd June 2012, and that he would be advised of the date, time and place of an inquiry.
The reserve portion of the urine sample was tested and the presence of Atenolol was confirmed.
On the day in question, Chappy’s Angel was 3.75 length winner over the Strathalbyn 536m in a time of 31.76, just outside the best of the day.
Atenolol is from a class of drugs known as beta blockers, the use of which blocks the bodies ability to increase heart rate in response to exercise and thereby increase workload. Its use in any from racing is as a “stopper”, a drug to make the athlete under perform.
The outcome of this stewards inquiry should prove interesting as Chappy’s Angel clearly was not “stopped” and did not under perform.
In fact Chappy’s Angel’s winning time was only .04 of a second slower than her maiden winning time of 31.72. Whatever the quantitative level of Atenolol that was found in the swab it is plainly evident from CHappy’s Angel’s performance that that level was not therapeutic, as it did not affect her performance from a outsiders point of view.
Mr Chapman was advised of the analysts results on Monday 6th August 2012 by hand delivered mail and is required to attend an inquiry at the offices ofSouth Australia Limited, 55 Cardigan Street, Angle Park on Wednesday 22nd August 2012 at 10.00am, together with any witnesses that may assist for an inquiry by the Stewards into the circumstances relating to the obtaining of the positive urine sample.
