Greyhound Racing South Australia Stewards completed an inquiry on 22 February 2012 into the circumstances relating to the obtaining of the positive urine sample from the greyhound Man Of Honour at the Greyhound Racing SA meeting held at Gawler on Sunday 11th December 2011.
Man Of Honour tested positive to the banned anabolic steroid Boldenone.
Prior to the banning of anabolic steroids in racing greyhounds, Boldenone was a commonly used steroid to keep bitches off season and also increase aggressiveness, confidence and chase in timid greyhounds. Boldenone was most commonly used in the commercially branded Anabolic Steroid "Drive".
Just last year, Chegia's husband Ossie received a 4 month disqualification for a positive swab stemming from the 2011 Adelaide Cup series.
Mrs. Elizabeth Chegia was charged with a breach of the GRSA Rules Of Greyhound Racing R83 which reads:
R83 Racing greyhound to be free of prohibited substances
(2) The owner, trainer or person in charge of a greyhound-
(a) nominated to compete in an Event;
(b) presented for a satisfactory, weight or whelping trial or such other trial as provided for pursuant to these Rules; or
(c) presented for any test or examination for the purpose of a period of incapacitation or prohibition being varied or revoked
shall present the greyhound free of any prohibited substance.
(3) The owner, trainer or person in charge of a greyhound presented contrary to sub-rule (2) shall be guilty of an offence.
(4) A greyhound presented for an Event contrary to sub-rules (1) or (2) shall be disqualified from the Event or any benefit derived from a trial or test.
(5) Where an Event is being or has been conducted as a series, if upon a single analysis a prohibited substance is found in a specimen-
(a) the greyhound shall be disqualified from the Event from which the specimen was taken and shall not be eligible to compete in any further Event in the series; and
(b) if the greyhound has competed in any further Event of the series the greyhound shall be disqualified retrospectively from the Event.
Mrs. Chegia pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Stewards after considering the evidence found Mrs. Chegia guilty of the charge and was disqualified for a period of 5 months effective from Midnight Wednesday 22nd February 2012.
Stewards acting under rule R83(4) disqualified Man O Honour from winning the Event and subsequently disqualified Man Of Honour in accordance with R83(4) from race eight(8) conducted at the meeting held at Gawler on 11th December 2011 and amended the placings accordingly.
