George Caffyn Disqualified

Greyhound () have finalised deliberations on penalty following analysts' reports of the finding of in the urine sample taken from No More Tears after that greyhound won Race 1 at the meeting on 12 October 2013.

Consistent with the protocols established under the GRNSW Prohibited Substance Penalty System, No More Tears' trainer George Caffyn was advised of the reports received from the Australian Racing Forensic Laboratory and Racing Science Centre QLD, via written notification.

Mr Caffyn could offer no definitive reason for the laboratory reports, opining only that the result may have come from contaminated meat supplied to his greyhounds.

Following correspondence, Mr Caffyn pleaded guilty to a charge under GAR 83 (2) (a) of having presented No More Tears for the event other than free of any prohibited substance.

After GRNSW had considered submissions from Mr Caffyn, he accepted a penalty of five weeks disqualification.
In considering penalty, stewards took into account such factors as Mr Caffyn's previously unblemished record of having no previous offence in more than 40 years of registration as a trainer, a lack of evidence of any support for the greyhound on the day, the nature of the substance involved being a Category 5 and its reported low level, his record of having a number of previously cleared samples, and his guilty plea.

Under GAR 83 (4), No More Tears was disqualified from the event in question and the placings amended accordingly.
