Brazendale Kennel Enjoying Tasmanian Greyhound Racing Success
Magra trainer Leon Brazendale was seen in the winners circle on two occasions at the HGRC meeting on Thursday night, when the consistent bitch Regal Onyz and her kennel mate Jaylei Henry greeted the judge in their respective events.
Where's Pedro bitch Regal Onyx recorded her sixth win and her second from the Brazendale complex when she defeated Pure Tiger and Kialdu Grace in the Winning Edge Kibble Stake for Grade 4/5 greyhounds, at odds of $10.80.
The bitch is raced by Robbie Bennett and was transferred to the Brazendale kennel by North West Coast mentor Gary Johnson several months ago.
“Gary quite often sends me greyhounds to try out on the Hobart circuit and Regal Onyx is one of the latest batch that he sent down,” Brazendale explained.
“All I tell him is that I will do my best with them and we leave it at that. He is very good to me and we enjoy a wonderful working relationship.”
Regal Onyx will have her next start over 580 metres at the NWGRC meeting on Tuesday afternoon and her trainer expects that she will once again give a good account of herself.
Jaylei Henry opened his winning account by defeating Winklee Weeper and Powder Monkey in the Right Price Meats Grade 5 event at odds of $15.90.
Raced by the previously mentioned Johnson and his wife Robyn, the son of Addis Boy has disappointed in the past and was having his 23rd start in a race, but may very well have now turned the corner.
Jaylei Henry's litter brother Jaylei Bill has also won two recent races from the Brazendale kennel, meaning that the veteran trainer has been enjoying a well deserved run of success.
“It is great to win races for Gary and Robyn, they are lovely people and never backward in coming forward if anyone needs a bit of assistance,” he explained.
Meanwhile the flying Damek won his second race since returning to Tasmania when he took out the betfair.com Invitation at the HGRC meeting at the cramped odds of $1.10.
The son of Big Daddy Cool has now won 25 of 32 lifetime starts while taking stakes of in excess of $62,000 and has only been defeated twice on Tasmanian soil.
On Thursday night he flew the lids and ran his rivals ragged, defeating the very good chasers Regent Typhoon and Sultan's Swing in 26.13, on a track not conducive to fast times.
Raced by Peter and June Phillips and now prepared by the former, Damek has disappointed while campaigning interstate, but is still regarded as one of the best chasers to have raced in Tasmania in recent years.
Leading trainer Susan Gittus provided the upset of Thursday night's racing when Due Diligence defeated Pantry Pat and Din's Choice in the Tasfreight Grade 5 event at odds of $50.10.
The daughter of Brett Lee's last win was at the same venue in November last year and she has now won two of 21 lifetime starts and stakes of almost $4,000.
