Tasmanian Greyhounds Welcome Back Ted Medhurst

Champion trainer has completed a three-year term of disqualification and was back at the on Tuesday afternoon at the West Greyhound Club's Devonport Raceway meeting.

Unfortunately the fairy-tale return did not eventuate when Ted's only runner Left Seattle, failed to run down tearaway leader Classic Crime in the Simon's Carpet One Juvenile.

The son of Cool went around as a heavily supported $2.60 favourite, but was shuffled back into the field early, before taking ground off Classic Crime in the run home.

The winner, which had previously been out of the money at four attempts, returned the huge win dividend of $33.30, which was surprising considering it is raced by big betting bookmaker Kevin Tolputt and prepared by leading trainer Anthony Bullock.

Ted Medhurst is regarded as one of the best trainers to have ever prepared a team in Tasmania, his big race record speaking for itself.

“I will take things along quietly for a while, in fact it will take me two years to build up my team,” he explained.

“I have several well related bitches and will breed from them and gradually get a team together, I am not sure at this stage if I will ever prepare a large numbers again.”

Based at Mangalore near , Medhurst considers the victory of the Barry Heawood owned in the 2004 Hobart Thousand as the crowning moment in his illustrious career, but it does not end there.

He has won a total of twenty Breeders Classic Finals, the on four occasions, the Devonport Cup on two occasions, the Illingworth Classic and numerous other feature events and finals.

Over the years his kennel has been represented by such outstanding chasers as Blazenka's Flyer, Kialdu Dór, Chief Wonder, Chief Token, High Wonder, Obie Trice, Final Image and Ethan Jack, to name just a few.

One of the trainers favourite greyhounds has always been the Launceston Cup winning bitch Emily's Wonder, which over the years has excelled as a matron.

By Malawi's Prince, the bitch won 20 races a decade ago and then proceeded to produce a host of winners and daughters that were also prolific in that regard.

“Recent winners High Choice and Accounts are members of the Emily's Wonder dynasty, I still have her at home as a pet,” he explained.

Having also experienced success as a harness racing trainer, Medhurst has not discounted also dabbling with a pacer or two “in his spare time.”

“I was brought up in a harness racing family and it is in my blood, so I see no reason why I shouldn't continue being involved,” he explained.

Meanwhile another prominent sportsmen has featured in the winners circle in Tasmania this week.

Despite not experiencing any joy at the MCG, was represented by a winner at the Tote Racing Centre on Monday night when Strapper's Boy was successful in the Launceston Mitsubishi Grade 5 event.

Prepared by Dale Hammersley at Newnham, the son of Collide defeated Colma and Capetown Kid as a heavily supported $2.20 favourite.
