Dundee Osprey takes out 2016 Speed Star

proved once again that he is one of the finest sprinters in the country, taking out Thursday night's event over 515m at Sandown Park.

The innovative series saw eight of the fastest chasers in Victoria converge on the track to compete in four two dog match races, with the winner of each match race collecting $10,000 and the fastest overall winner claiming an additional $15,000 plus the title of Speed Star champion.

Heading into the event, the second Speed Star of 2016, champion greyhound was the dominant favourite, coming into the race following a top second placing in the National Sprint Championship at on Saturday night.

The son of and Flying Liddy took on exciting youngster Dyna Boomer in the third match race of the night and was never in doubt after a brilliant beginning from the inside box, recording a fast 29.292.

The first match race was an even race, with Polijuice Potion (inside) taking on Allen Terminator (outside). When the lids flew open Polijuice Potion stumbled slightly, with Allen Terminator sprinting to a clear lead in the early stages.

Extending his lead down the back, the Mark Delbridge-prepared greyhound was too slick in the run to the line, holding off a fast finishing Polijuice Potion to record a 29.730 triumph.

(inside) competed against 's Shima Song (outside) in the second match race, booting up on the inside to hold out the black bitch in the run to the line on the first occasion and putting in a determined effort to score in a fast 29.480.

But the best was saved for last, with powerhouse chasers Dundee Osprey (inside) and Burn One Down (outside) going head to head in an exciting battle.

In the early stages it was Dundee Osprey which shot through to take up the front spot, leading clearly down the back before his opponent started grinding away, railing around the home turn and unleashing a powerful finishing burst in the run to the line.

However, Burn One Down couldn't quite do enough at the finish, going down by less than three one hundredths of a second, clocking 29.289 himself, with Dundee Osprey stopping the clock in 29.266.

The hot finishing time saw Dundee Osprey score a narrow victory, with Burn One Down in second and Zambora Brockie third.

A son of and Dundee Rose, Dundee Osprey has now won 11 of his 30 starts, including a tremendous triumph in the 1 Harrison-Dawson, for owner-trainer Geoff Scott-Smith, with the prize money from Thursday's success taking his career earnings to $181,855.
