Enry Walt’s Horsham Cup

Seasoned performer ($5.70) made the most of testing home straight when taking out the Exchange Hotel on Sunday night.

Enry Walt's big race experience served him well as he ran down the front-running Greta Bale after trailing that greyhound by several lengths throughout the race.

While he has made around a dozen group race finals, this was Enry Walt's first group win since snaring the 2010 Silver Chief 14 months ago, and it was trainer ' first Horsham Cup victory.

Runner-up was the fast finishing Allen Elroy ($23.40) with Greta Bale ($5.50) third.

Cup night was a real family-orientated affair the club took advantage of the next day public holiday, with a climbing wall and bungee ropes for children, and a jazz band playing. Together with full dining and bar facilities everyone was catered for.

Being a twilight fixture the meeting starting when the Horsham Fishing Competition finished making it easy for people to walk from the river over to the Horsham Showgrounds.

Heats for the cup were conducted last Wednesday night. trainer qualified three runners for the final. They included the fastest heat winner in 26.98. Since the Horsham Cup was first run in 1978, Bate has won it eight times including a hat-trick of wins from 1982-84 with Satan's Shroud, Virgo Rose and Propellant.

However win number nine will have to wait as his finalists were unable to break through with Allen Elroy performing the best when he finishing second.

Decorated sprinter Enry Walt after drawing perfectly in box eight had his trainer Gary Ennis quietly confident that Enry Walt's experience will give him an edge in the $28,000 to the winner final.

“Enry Walt was racing in his 12th final, and it certainly gave him an edge in big race experience over the rest of the field. He likes to use a bit of the track, and was drawn perfectly in box 8”. Gary Ennis said of his 2010 Group 1 Silver Chief winner.

Time for the final was 27.22 with sections of 6.27 (Greta Bale) and 13.54 (Flash Drive).

After the placed runners the rest of the field finished in the following order. Hot Grille ($3.60), Flash Drive ($9.80), Malta ($8.00), Radley Bale ($4.10) and Rafferty Flyer ($27.70).

Enry Walt was bred and is raced and trained by veteran conditioner Gary Ennis at Sandhurst in Victoria. He is a Black Dog whelped January 2008 by Primo Uno from Awesome Saint (Awesome Assassin x Little Saint). Enry Walt has won 15 of his 46 starts and has been placed on 15 occasions. With the $28,000 first prize for the Horsham Cup it took his current stake earnings to $179,465.
