Peggy May Salutes In Sandown’s Sapphire Crown Final For Jason Thompson

Showing her customary early speed from box 3, Peggy May ($3.40) led her kennel mate and race favourite El Brooklyn ($3.30) through the first turn. Witch's Potion ($18.40) charged through the first turn to force El Brooklyn wide which allowed Peggy May to open a three length gap on the field.

From there, the white and black speed machine would never be headed, maintaining that margin to the finish and stop the clock in a race record 29.42.

The win was Peggy May's second race win of her career, having previously captured the , and improved her race record to 29 wins from 48 career starts and the $75,000 first prize to her career prizemoney to $179,465.

It was an especially memorable night for Thompson's 15 year old son Ben, who had the privilege of handling his first Group race winner.

“We left it to Ben tonight and he did a super job,” said his proud mother Seona Hood.

“We're very proud of him.”

Peggy May's victory was the fifth at Group level for Thompson in 2012, having already claimed the Group 1 Silver Chief at with Godsend, the Group 1 Golden Easter Egg with Don't Knocka Him, the Group 2 Classic with El Brooklyn, and the Group 2 Bendigo Cup with Peggy May.
