Racing Minister Congratulates Victorian Greyhound Racing’s Finest

Minister for Racing Denis Napthine last night congratulated an outstanding line-up of greyhounds and that were recognised at the 2012 Victorian Greyhound Industry Awards held at Crown Palladium.

“Greyhound racing in Victoria is on the up and up. In 2012, prize money increased by 20 per cent to a record $36 million, betting turnover levels are unprecedented and some of the biggest crowds seen for more than thirty years are turning up at tracks,” Dr Napthine said.

“In addition, last year saw new standards set by greyhounds, their trainers, owners and breeders as well as by race clubs, club officials and of course the many dedicated volunteers.”

Dr Napthine helped present the prestigious award to the connections of Don't Knocka Him, trained by .

The was awarded to John Waugh of the Greyhound Racing Club in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the industry.

Other major awards winners were Anakie's who earned the Metropolitan Trainers Premiership, while trainer of Devon Meadows received the Silver Fox Award. The Silver Fox is awarded to a young industry participant for their outstanding achievements in the training, breeding and promotion of greyhound racing.

“It is fantastic to see Greyhound introduce the People's Choice Award this year for Most Popular Greyhound. This is recognition of the ever growing popularity of greyhound racing in the Victorian community,” Dr Napthine said.

The inaugural award was presented to the connections of Robert Britton trained Dodge the Batten.

Dr Napthine also congratulated the inductees for 2012:

  • Mr Alec Reid (Category – Trainer)
  • Mr Tony McGrath (Category – Breeder)
  • Bombastic Shiraz (Category – Racing Greyhound/Sire)
  • Sydney Gem (Category – Brood Matron)

“The success of today's greyhound racing industry is built upon the dedication and commitment of people such as Alec Reid and Tony McGrath among countless others,” Dr Napthine said.

“Greyhound racing is a major contributor to the Victorian economy providing more than $200 million in annual economic benefits and close to 2,000 jobs across the state,” Dr Napthine said.

“That is why the Victorian Coalition Government is a strong supporter of greyhound racing particularly through our Victorian Racing Industry Fund.”
