Slipaway Bennie Will Have To Survive Box Seven
Ballarat trainer Hayden Gilders will be hoping that his chaser Slipaway Bennie can chalk up another win at Ballarat on Wednesday night.
Slipaway Bennie has had to be nursed throughout his career by Gilders, due to constant trouble with metacarpal and hock injuries.
“He's got plenty of ability, but we have had plenty of trouble getting him to the track. Gilders said”
The son of History Lesson has recorded six wins for Gilders, and with luck in running could well add to that record.
Gilders said that Slipaway Bennie's best wins have been when he has had inside box draws.
“He likes to go straight to the rails, and races best when he has been able to lead.”
But Slipaway Bennie will have to contend with a Box 7 draw, in the race to be run over 450 metres.
“We are hoping that he can get a cart across the field from Pyrenees Destiny which has drawn inside him.”
“If he can get a clear run in the race we expect him to go well.”
Slipaway Bennie's form on paper is a bit indifferent, with the highlight being a win at Sandown three starts ago.
But there have been excuses in his other races, as he has received checks in running which have affected his chances.
Gilders returned to greyhound training only two years ago after a lengthy time off, and said that he is thoroughly enjoying the challenge of training greyhounds again.
He believes that Pyrenees Destiny and Young Ravello will be the hardest for his chaser to beat.
Avoca chaser Pyrenees Destiny for trainer Ian Robinson has been racing consistently, and has saluted the judge in two of his past five race starts.
He is a good box dog who races near the lead in his races, but has so far not won from his Box 6 draw.
Young Ravello for Anakie trainer Jeff Britton is a proven performer who has drawn ideally in Box 8.
Nine of Young Ravello's thirteen race wins to date have come from outside box draws.
If he is able to run up to his best recorded time at the track and distance of 25.31 seconds, he will no doubt be in the finish of the race.
