The Sandown Greyhound Racing Club [SGRC] and Melbourne Greyhound Racing Association [MGRA] will implement stakes increases for grade 5 finals from 1 July 2009.
As part of the changes to the Victorian metropolitan racing calendar announced in October 2008, the finals of all metropolitan grade 5 finals over all distances will carry a $10,000 first prize.
The prizemoney increase comes on the back of other recent increases to features races including The Radio Sport 927 Sandown Cup and MTD Australian Cup.
“Increasing returns to owners is a priority for both clubs,” said MGRA Chairman Eddie Caruana.”
“Grade 5 series are an integral part of the racing calendar and an important stepping stone for young greyhounds. The increased prizemoney for these grade 5 finals is an excellent complement to the recent prizemoney increases to the Group calendar.”
The announcement comes after extensive discussions between the two clubs in advance of changes to the Australian Greyhound Racing Association group racing calendar due in 2011.
“This announcement is a fantastic example of the two metropolitan clubs working together to ensure Victoria remains the nation’s leader in greyhound racing,” said SGRC Chairman Geoff Dawson.
The first $10,000 to-the-winner grade 5 final will be run at Sandown Park on Thursday 16th July followed by The Meadows on Saturday 15th August.
