Black Dymas Has Sights On Canning Trophy Final At Cannington

Jason Stuart and his chaser Black Dymas are yet another example of the special between trainer and greyhound.

“He is a nice dog; good in the kennels, just does nothing wrong. He won't be going anywhere when it comes time for retirement.”

With retirement still a while away, Black Dymas, informally known as Budda, has his sights set on 's Final on Saturday night.

In Last week's heats, the son of – Right On Ruby, defeated Coloccini in 30.72. It was a performance that earned him respect from spectators. The black dog missed the start, but managed to muster up on the rails to sit in second position behind Coloccini. Turning into the home straight Black Dymas was able to pull together enough strength to win the heat by 1.75 lengths.

“I wasn't confident that he would win but I definitely had faith he would put in a good run”, trainer Jason Stuart explained.

“Coming into the heat I was worried about the seven, Perfect Poison, because she is pretty strong. I knew my dog would definitely take the short cuts and stick to the fence and that's how he got the chocolates.”

The heat win was Black Dymas' second win since his injury induced spell a month ago. Stuart's main aim was getting his chasers weight right after Black Dymas had recovered from splitting his webbing twice.

“I just want to get him back to when he was running his best times. I had him up near on a kilo from where I wanted him. He is nearly back to his best.”

Black Dymas is for his ninth win from 28 starts, and for the second consecutive week he will be wearing the white and black rug, which will give him every chance come box rise.

“The way I see it Star (1) should just lead and win, but it just really depends on where Takahashi (7) sits in the run. If she is anywhere near us on the first turn I think it's lights out because she is an exciting bitch.”

Takahashi has been on an upward climb since her long stint on the sidelines after injuring her stopper bone. She dropped in distance from the 642 to 530 for the heats of the Canning Trophy and has onlookers amazed with her come from behind victories.

“Ben Abercrombie has done a great job with the bitch, not many people would have the patience to do what he did.”

has three chasers in the final. Star Recall (1) and High Recall (8) both have honourable box manners and Star Recall has the obvious advantage from box one, which has earned her equal $3.00 favouritism with Takahashi. High Recall should be held out from box eight which is a big disadvantage, and although she has recorded the faster time of the two, she wont be able to do anything wrong if she is going to win the race. Kid (6) is also a talented youngster, but he isn't known for coming out of the boxes well. He is capable of running time once he gets going and is a chance with luck in running, however this final is going to be hard for him to win with Takahashi looking for a similar come from behind win.

Powerhouse (4) is also a dog that has made his way back through the ranks from injury. He has only had five starts back at Cannington and is yet to pass the finishing post first, however last year he recorded a slick 30.32, so he is more then capable of running decent time.

Black Dymas' litter brother Astronomic also finds himself in the race jumping from box five. Four starts back Astronomic recorded a personal best time of 30.23, making him the fastest chaser in the field.

“Astronomic is probably a big risk if he pings the lids, it will be a good race.”

With Black Dymas up against a field of impressive chasers he is going to have to put his best paw forward if he is to win the race and take home the $10,500 in prize money. The 2014 Canning Trophy is set to jump at 8.27pm Perth time from the 530 metre boxes.
