Mandurah Track Record Tumbles

Western Australia has joined in with the rest of Australia in the record-breaking department with Back Jack Tewin lowing 's 490 metre record on Thursday night.

The record of 27.18 was held by Wheely Smart for the last four years and was lowered by almost two lengths to 27.08 by trainer Dwayne Jovanovic's chaser.

Despite jumping from box five, Back Jack Tewin started $3.00 favourite. As the lids flew open the black chaser shot straight to the lead over Premier Surf (box two) and West On Manu (box four), from then it was only a matter of how far Back Jack Tewin could extend his leading margin.

“This rates as the biggest high from my career, I was very happy when I saw the clock.” Trainer Dwayne Jovanovic explained.

“He is just a very good dog and I was very confident he was going to win. We knew he was a fast dog ever since he came over here, someone told me that the way he ran a few starts ago, coming from six lengths behind, that he would come close to breaking the .”

The son of made the trip from Queensland in August last year after Jovanovic purchased him. He has had 18 starts on WA soil, for six wins and five placing's. He has loved the 490 metre distance from his first start back in December last year, which he won from box three. From then he has gone onto win on another three occasions, all best of the night performances.

“We got him from the person we always get our pups from, we have brought six to eight dogs off this breeder. His friend was selling him, so be brought him for a cheap price. When we first brought him we thought we would just be able to have some fun with the dog. When he was trialling and trialling well, we knew he was going to be a pretty good dog.”

With successful starts over the 600 metre distance for his pervious trainer, Jovanovic aims to get his chaser running his best over both and Mandurah's middle distance.

“We are going to try for the 600 metres, I'm pretty sure there is a middle distance challenge coming up at Mandurah and then I will take him back to Cannington and give him another go there.”

In between starts at Mandurah, Back Jack Tewin has tried his luck at Cannington over the 530 metre distance, his five starts at Cannington have seen him finish unplaced on each occasion, with Jovanovic putting it down to his chaser not being comfortable at the track yet. Jovanovic is more then blessed to have a chaser like Back Jack Tewin in his name after being a greyhound trainer for just over a year.

“I like the greyhounds, my uncle Peter was involved with them and that's how I started out.”

With just seven chasers in his kennel, four race dogs and three young ones, Jovanovic is able to spend the time needed to get the best out of each of his greyhounds.

A likely start over Mandurah's 490 metre distance awaits Back Jack Tewin next week and all eyes will be in hope of a repeat performance.
