Race Record Falls As Glen Gallon Flies

Star Queenslander, Glen Gallon provided the highlight run of the Perth Cup heats, when flying around the 530m trip in 29.87.The run enters the books as the fastest time ever recorded during a Perth Cup series, replacing High Earner's previous best of 29.93 during his successful 2010 campaign.

What made the performance even more impressive was the way he went about it. It wasn't simply a ping-and-win affair, as the events of the first 100 metres would no doubt have cost him some time overall and could have been made a lot worse.

Jumping from the awkward six alley, Glen Gallon was one of the last away, and soon took a path heading towards the rail. It was at that time that Big Jo King shifted inwards causing Or Else, who had drawn box one, to fall heavily. Big Jo King then came out and clipped Glen Gallon, but instead of hesitating, the powerful fawn chaser kept his mind on the job and burst through to find the front, going 5.71 for the first section.

From there on it was a procession. The margin had opened up to over eight lengths as the clock paused at 18.55 for the second section.

Big Jo King and the well performed Dyna Bert were in pursuit, but knowing the strength of Glen Gallon, all eyes were then focussed on the clock. The margin blew out to over 13 lengths in the home stretch and the eventual 29.87 winning time was shown.

Trainer Tony Brett and the members of the Velocity Lodge Syndicate will have to wear something blue for luck next Saturday night, as their charger has drawn box four in the $140,000 to the winner final.

Acheiving the Perth Cup record is no easy feat as there have been some excellent times posted over the history of the race. Back in 2003, Kovu ran 30.26 which was a track record at the time, while Velocette re-wrote the record with a 29.92 performance in 2009. In fact the 29.87 run is the fourth fastest ever run at Cannington, only beaten by Miata's three incredible midweek runs in 2011.

On paper, Glen Gallon is starting to build an imposing race record and is in a very rich vein of form. Overall he has won 14 races while being placed another 7 times from only 25 starts. His last seven races have yielded six victories, including a Group 1 title and a flying 29.45 run at . The only blemish for Glen Gallon since November last year is a luckless second behind Godsend in the Group 1 Silver Chief final, meaning this upcoming appearance will be his third Group 1 final in as many months. His career record also shows wins over several high prized scalps such as , Bogie King and .

For the breeding buffs, Glen Gallon is an August '09 whelping from out of Incoherent. Flying Stanley is a former American chaser (Kiowa Sweet Trey x Flying Rimes), while his dam, Incoherent is a local product from x Queen of Tigers. Incoherent raced 51 times for 9 wins, with victories at , Gosford, and a 30.30 win at .

While Incoherent only amassed $11,400 in prize money, her son is on the verge on breaking $300,000 if he can repeat the dose in the 2012 Perth Cup Final. Also being only two and half years old, Glen Gallon's best racing is sure to be in front of him.
